One envious disruptive element, that can spoil the whole sankirtana party.

One time, Srivas’s mother-in-law, his what do you call it, shasur… she decided to sneak a peek of that sankirtan at Srivas’s house. So she somehow or another snuck into the house and she hid under a basket and she then was peeking out watching Lord Caitanya and everyone chanting. So Lord Caitanya and the other they came… they came into Srivas’s house, closed the door, paid their obeisances and started to chant. Hare Krishna Hare Krishna… different chanting… suddenly Lord Caitanya stopped the kirtan. You probably heard this already. He stopped the kirtan, said,” Why I am not feeling ecstasy? Everyday we are chanting, we are feeling ecstasy. Why I am not feeling any ecstasy today? Who is the cause?” All the devotees started looking. They started thinking, “Oh no! What did I do?” they think, “What was the mistake I made?” Then Lord Caitanya said, “Maybe there is a invader here, a intruder.” So then they all looked around, Srivas looked in his house, everyone looked they did not find any. So then Lord Caitanya said,” Alright, chanting.” So again they were chanting,

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna

Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/

Hare Rama Hare Rama

Rama Rama Hare Hare

After 10-15 minutes again Lord Caitanya stopped, “Still I am not feeling any bliss. Who is the cause?” * Pshh * This time the devotees were very very nervous. “We must have committed a great aparadha that Lord Caitanya is not feeling any transcendental ecstasy in our association.” Son then Lord Caitanya, “There must be a intruder.” So this time Srivas he did a thorough check and there he found under his basket… under a basket in his house was his mother-in-law.

You know in India, mother-in-law is respected just like one’s mother, if not more. And India they are very respectful to their parents. Up to now I don’t think there is much uh, incidents of patricide in India. But uh, so even… then you can understand very respectful to such elder family people. But he immediately grabbed her by the hair, dragged her out and threw out of the front door and said, “You don’t intrude like this.” Came back, told Lord Caitanya,”Alright, please forgive me, chant kirtana.”

Lord Caitanya started to chant and He stopped again, later on, and then He asked Srivas that,”Srivas, wasn’t that your mother-in-law that was in the house?” He said, “Yes.” Everyone was astonishing, “Mother-in-law!” Lord Caitanya said,”Why you disrespected her so much? You dragged… you grabbed her by the hair? Is it the proper way of dealing with the mother-in-law?” Well Srivas said that uh, ” I may go to hell or whatever, but I don’t care what happens to me. But I don’t want to see that Your… that You should… Your divine self should be in any way dissatisfied. Whatever may be that disturbance to Your happiness that is my greatest enemy. No matter who is that person may be. That is an obstacle for me. She was creating a disturbance in Your devotional service. She might be my anyone, I don’t care. It has no value for me if it is a disturbance for Your satisfaction.” Then Lord Caitanya embraced him and said,”How you are such a devotee!” And said that, “In the future you should …” like that.

He showed actually of course the pure devotee, they are so much fixed in Krishna, whatever will satisfy, because that is the principal consideration. But there just was a non-devotee intruding even it was a relative, but that changed the whole atmosphere so much so that Lord Caitanya, He couldn’t feel any bliss. If there is one envious disruptive element, that can spoil the whole sankirtana party. That’s why even the spiritual master is advised that if there’s a disciple who is polluting other disciples, that disciple should be rejected.

Brahma appeared as Hari dasa Thakura

Lord Caitanya told Brahma that, “You appear in the family of a Mohammedan, but you will constantly chanting the holy name. You will be chanting the holy 300,000 times a day. So by this you will become purified. The chanting of Hare Krishna will purify you so much that for the rest…” Brahmas only half life is gone, little less than half. One paradha is finished you see. Half life is gone, another half he’s got left. So He said, “By this, the rest half of your life…” which is millions and billions of years. You can’t begin to calculate how long it is. “You will be completely…just by this one chanting…” for you know, a few… forty years, fifty years of his manifested pastime. “By this chanting you will become completely purified for the rest of your existence, in this life, and then you will be able to return back to the spiritual world.” So, and then Lord Caitanya said, “And your name will be Haridasa.” then Lord Caitanya disappeared… no then He told him, “so you prepare yourself”. then disappeared.

So, Lord Brahma, he went back to his uh, Satyaloka, his planet, the planet of Satya, and then, of course he came down and he appeared as Haridasa Thakura, and assisted Lord Caitanya in His transcendental pastimes. So, this opportunity to be in the pastime of Lord Caitanya was received even by great great demigods like Lord Brahma and others. It’s something very special, so we should also take it like that there is a special opportunity.

Don’t take offence very easily

Dhritharashtra, because of his offences, we know that later on he wasn’t able to take up devotional service. Instead Vidhura gave him the next best he could give ; he gave him yoga meditation. So by doing yoga meditation, at least he could become liberated. Because he had committed so many offences against the devotees, against Krishna that how could he, after that, render devotional service? You see. It was impossible. Of course, we see that like Jagai Madhai, they committed so many offences but Lord Caitanya’s mercy was such that they could be engaged in devotional service. In that way, even Yamaraja , he was completely astonished. You see, Vidhura of course, is Yamaraj. And even he couldn’t give devotional service to his own brother, because he had committed offences. Because in that yuga, in Dwapara yuga, Krishna wasn’t so kind to forgive offences to that extent, you see. But Lord Caitanya is even more merciful than Krishna. Namo maha vadaanyaya Krishna prema pradhayate, Krishnaaya Krishna Caitanyaaya naamne Gaura Tvishe Namo Namaha. So, He is even more merciful than Krishna. He is giving out that mercy in spite of offences, He even gives out mercy, even forgives one for offences. Even the people who chant Nitai Gaura Radhey Shyam Hare Krishna Hare Ram and other concocted mantras, because somehow or other they are chanting Lord Caitanya’s name, even they are feeling some transcendental happiness from it, you see. But unfortunately, they are confusing people about the philosophy. So in that sense, it will take them some time to completely become purified but even then while they are chanting they can feel something, no doubt. That is the mercy of Lord Caitanya ; He doesn’t take offence very easily.

Offense – pulls out ones devotional assets

The chanting takes immediate effect when there’s no offense or when there’s very little offense, but with offense, the action is delayed. So, offense means to offend a pure devotee, to disobey the guru, to offend the scriptures, to put material conceptions on the chanting, to be inattentive while chanting and especially to chant so that one can do more sinful activities. If one thinks that, “Well by chanting I get purified from sin, and then later I can do more sin.” all these type of mentalities are called aparadha or offense. So especially the offense to the pure devotee completely pulls out one’s devotional asset.

A mad elephant offense

Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He advised us that the offense against the Vaisnava, or Vaisnava-aparadha is the most dangerous thing. Vaisnava-aparadha mata hati upade va chinde… yaya, or… sukhi yaya pata… upade va chinde, lota sukhi’ yaya pata

That, this offensing or giving an offense to a pure Vaisnava is a mad elephant offense. If one commits a mad elephant offense, then that mad elephant goes into the garden of one’s devotional life and pulls out the devotional creeper, right from the root.

When you pull a plant out by the root, it may stay green for a few days, but in no time at all, leaves will dry and fall off. So, sukhi yaya pata means that once this Vaisnava-aparadha has been created, even though for a short time, they may be existing apparently in some spiritual life, very soon all of their spiritual assets will be dried up, and they’ll be completely spiritually bankrupt, you see. So, one should avoid very particularly this offense against a Vaisnava, the pure devotee of the Lord.

Relatives committing offence to devotees & how to address?

Question: If our close relatives commit offence to devotees and devotional service, what are we supposed to do? Parvati Swaminathan, Padmasakhi dd.

Guru Maharaj: Sastra tells us how to respond to offences. If you can defeat that person’s argument, that is the first thing. If you cannot do that, thenyou can walk away from that place. Otherwise, you can leave your body and go back to Godhead, But, you should not artificially commit suicide, that is just youspontaneously leave your body. Like, Sati, when she heard the offence against Lord Siva, her husband, from her father Daksa, she just left her body, spontaneously. So, these three things are given. At least you can protest, that you know that this is not true. If because of age or something, relationship, and they may not listen to you,at least it should go on records that what they are saying is not true.

Offending devotional service

Question: What does offending devotional service mean?

Guru maharaj: You see, like Lord Caitanya said, mayawadi bhasyasonilehoye sarva nash –  if you listen to the mayawadis, it will destroy your bhakti So that is a type of offense to devotional service. We think that we are equal or greater than Krsna. That is not possible. We are small, infinitesimal particles.Like that if we offend a devotee, that is also an offence to bhakti.

“Caitanya Mahaprabhu has requested us not to allow vaisnava aparada, the weeds amongst devotional service to take over our hearts. Because then that real devotional creeper which is being watered by the mercy of Mahaprabhu will be smothered, and its growth will be stopped.”

Question: We observe that your heart is so magnanimous that you hardly criticize anyone. We heard you say in lectures that you respect those who criticize you in public. Please enlighten us, how we follow this vaisnava etiquette?

Guru Maharaj: By following it! Remember that everyone is dear to Krsna. So even though we may be criticized, Lord Caitanya said we should more tolerant than a tree, more humble than a blade of grass, we should offer all respect to others and not expect any respect for ourselves. In this way we can always chant Hare Hare Hare. Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

Never Criticize anyone

There may be difference in opinion about what is the best way to preach, but we shouldn’t ever criticize anyone. Lord Caitanya said even though Jagai and Madhai were great sinners before, once they surrendered, they should not be criticized. One should never comment on anyone’s physical situation, his bodily features or his education, his skin color.

Mad Elephant Offence

The first offence, vaisnava aparadh, is very serious. Lord Caitanya describes this offence in the Caitanya Caritamrita, as the mad elephant offence. Sometime we may not realize, every devotee, every man, every vaisnava, every vaisnavi, everybody is very dear to Lord Krsna. Lord Caitanya instructed that we should treat everyone with respect.

Vaishnava Offence

All vaisnavas are very dear to Lord Krsna. Therefore, we should also be very respectful of all devotees. The GBC has a law that even if a husband hits his wife, it is a vaisnava offence. That not only is she a wife but she is also a vaisnavi. So we should be very careful how we deal with vaisnavas, vaisnavis.

What kind of spiritual declination one goes thru if a devotee criticizes or blasphemes another devotee? Does it impact devotional services?

The devotional service becomes very dry. The ecstasy of pure love is obstructed. There was a pastime of the six Goswamis, when one of the goswamis was reading the Bhagavatam, and he felt great ecstasy. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ho! Ho! Ho! Ho! He started laughing! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! and then one devotee was walking by, and he was handicapped. So he thought that this, I forget who, Rupa Goswami or whoever, he is laughing at me. So he thought he was offended. I never expected that one of the acharyas will laugh at me because I am physically handicapped! I feel so bad! So then all of a sudden that goswami lost his ecstasy, and then he was finding devotional service very dry, no taste! So then he consulted with another goswami, I think it was Sanatan Goswami, and he said invite everyone to come to a feast, and whoever you had offended, he won’t come – one who thinks he is offended. So then he noticed that this one devotee did not come. So he went to his house and he asked him, they started talking out and the devotee said, you laughed at me! I was not laughing at you, you are a vaishnava, I was reading Bhagavatam and was feeling bliss and I started to laugh. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Haaa! I was not laughing at you! I did not know you were there even! He said, I have committed an offence to you as I thought you had offended me. So please forgive me and then the two bowed down and then the goswami got his ecstasy back! So even a thing like this when one feels accidentally offended, and it was not intended at all, but the goswami lost his ecstasy! So what to speak of us! If we offend a devotee, and when don’t have a taste for devotional service, then we know why. So we should be very careful not to offend any devotee. Hare Krishna!

Finding Faults

“If somebody wants to find faults, he can always find faults. They can find faults in the moon, “Oh, the moon has got a spot face.” They can find faults in Krishna. And if someone wants to find good qualities, in a devotee you will find many good qualities. Even if there is a bad quality, by Krishna’s mercy bad qualities are destroyed.”

Whoever Blasphemes a Vaishnava will fall down to hell!

In the Skanda purana, Markandeya speaks to Bhagiratha as follows:

“My dear king, if one derides an exalted devotee, he loses the results of his pious activities, his opulence, his reputation and his sons. Vaishnavas are all great souls, whoever blasphemes them falls down to the hell known as Maha Raurava. He is also accompanied by his forefathers. Whoever kills or blasphemes a vaishnava, whoever is envious of a vaishnava or angry with him and whoever does not offer obeisances, or feel joy upon seeing a vaishnava, certainly falls into a hellish condition.”

Vaishnava Aparadha

Whatever pious deeds we do in Vrndavan the benefit is 1000 times, but if we do any sinful deeds the result is 1000 times more. So Jagannath das babaji said that there is more heat in Vrndavan, high heat. Not temperature hot but heat of sinful deeds. If one commits offence there, then one gets 1000 times more sinful result.

But in Navadvip if one does service, they get 1000 times benefit, but much less result of offence. Even then one still has to stay clear of vaishnava aparadh, offence to the vaishnavas.
