The Process of Bhakti yoga

Śrīla Prabhupāda telling his disciples, that you should try to use your intelligence to see how Kṛṣṇa will be happy. In general people use their intelligence and try to see how they can have more sense gratification. But if we use our intelligence how to spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness, that is the proper use. So, Lord Caitanya wanted to see everybody Kṛṣṇa conscious. Śrīla Prabhupāda, he tried to think how to do that. So, like this, if we are absorbed how to please Kṛṣṇa, that is the process of bhakti-yoga.

The Resistance to Maya

In the Western world, what has to be done is people’s resistance to maya has to increase so that they can bring it into a healthy balance, and chanting Hare Krishna regularly, by even listening to tapes, I mean some businessman are always take the Hare Krishna tapes, different bhajan tapes and playing in their cars driving to work. Some people tell me that for two hours they are stuck in traffic jams hearing the bhajans or some people chant while they are driving, when they are stuck in traffic jams try to chant as many rounds. So how people can make their homes and their lives Krishna conscious, this is the unique contribution of vedic culture.

The transformation of transcendental Love

Brahmā has one head in each direction, he voluntarily brought all his heads to the ground and touched Kṛṣṇa’s feet with the tips of his four helmets. Although his intelligence works in every direction, he surrendered everything before the boy Kṛṣṇa. Brahmā washed the feet of Kṛṣṇa with his stears, and here the word sujalaiḥ indicates that his tears were purified. As soon as bhakti is present, everything is purified (sarvopādhi-vinirmuktam). Therefore Brahmā’s crying was a form of bhakty-anubhāva, a transformation of transcendental ecstatic love.

Don’t lose your transcendental knowledge*

Prabhupāda said, he was saving people from really hellish conditions of life, gross materialistic conditions of life. And the danger is, if you lose the transcendental knowledge, you go back to where you came. You go back to the level you’re at, which in the case of persons who didn’t have any culture – spiritual culture – to begin with, that means that the possibility of falling really back into gross sinful, gross materialistic activities is very great. So that’s like the amount of space… the distance we can fall is much more deep. The crevice is very profound! So we should be very, very careful to maintain our transcendental knowledge, otherwise we can start to act like a materialist very easily.

The essence of devotional service

we can choose what influence we want – we want to be under the *material influence* or under the *spiritual influence* . It is up to us. If we choose to be under the material influence there it is, the whole material world you just go and work and you will get the karmas for what you are doing. And if you choose to be under the spiritual influence then you render *devotional service for Krishna* and chant Hare Krishna then you will be *under His protection.* So this is the essence of devotional service to take the shelter of Krishna then we can overcome all types of difficulties.

Engage ever in service

The type of frustration may help one in the beginning to make a few steps forward in Krishna Consciousness. But eventually unless one cannot develop their full Krishna Consciousness. They cannot be free from the influences of the material world. When one is fully, He is basically well situated, fixed in devotional service. Then they naturally are getting so much energy from lord Krishna. Then it is very easy to receive this Krishna Conscious movement.

Great leadership starts with conscious

In whatever case, we do everything in the attitude of service. For those who have to take leadership position, they always have to check their consciousness that they are in the proper devotional attitude as a servant. As a servant you may also have to control, that is one of the services. But that service of controlling is always dangerous because, the demigods, they control it but sometimes they get so much into their controlling mood that they forget or they think that they are independent. Even like Lord Brahma, he stole Krishna’s cows and calfs feeling a little bit independent, or like Indra who started to send so much rain because Krishna did not worship, the inhabitants didn’t worship Indra, instead they worshipped Govardhan. But later they were taught by Krishna, that actually they were subordinate and Krishna was the Supreme Lord. And they realised their offense and they begged for forgiveness.

Doing dharma!! No only festivals

people they think that religion has to be very dry, or some type of austere thing, no. Real spiritual life is a nitya mahotsava, it’s a daily festival. This chanting the Lord’s name. In fact Caitanya Mahaprabhu had given dharma in such a way, that you don’t think that you are doing dharma, you think that you are doing only festival. There is no austerity that you feel that there is something that I am missing in my life. The whole life you are going and you are thinking, “everything is complete, but same time you are taking, you are achieving the highest perfection of religion, highest perfection of life. This is what we need.

Cleanse your heart layer after layer till the pure layer

Sometimes, devotees when they first come, sometimes even they may come and their heart may be very open, very receptive, very enthusiastic. And you see that they make very rapid advancement. But then, sometimes due to offending other devotees, due to little jealousies or something, which are little subtle Mayas. Just like Lord Caitanya, when He did Gundica marjana, first He swept out all the big leaves, and the big branches and stones and things that had fallen in the temple over the year. After cleaning it out, then He… everyone thought “Oh! This is very nice!”

He said, “No, now you bring in brooms, we are going to sweep out the dust, and the small little, little broken leaves, cracks and everything.” So, these big branches, these are like following the four regulative principles. Avoiding the grossest, you see, Mayas. Breaking regulative principles, being violent, things like that. But then the next thing, sweeping, these are a little subtler. Little subtler desires for sense gratification, desires for false prestige, desire for being respected by others, desire for having some position, somehow when these get frustrated, then also, one is put into illusion. One is feeling very frust… feeling very bad. Then after that was all swept out, then Lord Caitanya had them bring in buckets and buckets of water, and they completely washed down the whole Gundica temple. Then after washing down, everything looked completely spotless, and just sparkling. The Caitanya Caritamrta suggests that it was like Lord Caitanya’s heart, it was so pure, and still Lord Caitanya sat down with his little nail, with little twig or something, they were scraping out the cracks. So, like that, in the purport, Srila Prabhupada said that, we have to cleanse our heart layer after layer after layer after layer, until finally we come down to the absolute pure layer.

The derived formula of satisfaction

The materialist they can’t understand the devotee actually doesn’t lose any happiness. They get the full happiness. But they also they are not deriving satisfaction from that material happiness. The devotee derives the satisfaction from the pure devotional service.

The good qualities of Vaishnava

Vasudeva Datta, he prayed that “All living entities in the universe let them be delivered to Krishna, let me take their karma.” They know not that those living entities did anything for Vasudev Datta. Why is he taking? “Let me take their karmas.” Everybody is hungry to get rid of karmas. He is saying “Give me their karma. Let them go back to Krishna.” Because that was his mercy. That was his very kind mood that he thought that “Somehow I tasted the nectar of Krishna’s seva, Krishna’s service and these people they are all bahir-mukha. They are just absorbed in material suffering and enjoyment missing out their real happiness. So once I already experience even for a second, the happiness of Krishna now my life is already fulfilled. Why should one person just be happy and everyone suffer? Better let me suffer and them all go back to Krishna. Let me take their karma, and let them go back. Then I can just suffer. For one person, if I suffer, what’s the harm? I am insignificant… if so many can be saved.

The pure bhakti is the real mercy…

Mercy. Of course is someone gives you something for which they are not obliged to do that, that’s called mercy. If you make a business deal with some merchant, that “I’ll work for you and you pay me thousand rupees per month.” and he pays you thousand rupees, and that is the market rate for that job, then it is not a question of mercy, its fair market. If he doesn’t need any employee, and neither he has anybody, he say you’ll stay here and I will give you some money, then you can say, “Well he’s being merciful.” That means that it is some kindness. That he is doing something for which he is not actually necessary to be done. He is doing it because of some sentiment or some kindness on his part to help another. In Krishna’s case you see He gives His mercy. That means that He is not obliged to do so.

See, there’s nothing we can do there’s nothing we can do to actually get from Him some particular benediction whereby we are obliged to do that. That’s why even sometimes if the Lord gives a devotee a material benediction they’ll say, “That’s not merciful.” Some pure devotee might out of his deep love He may also even criticize that to give a devotee who is serving to give him some material thing this is not mercy because that material thing is not so valuable. That if they can get pure bhakti, that is real mercy, like that. But these are internal type of sentiments. Basically mercy means they are giving some more than what they need to give out of their own kindness, out of their very own broad heart, they are giving.

The real blessings

Normally a person performs punya or karmas to get a good result to achieve svarga, to get money, fame, learning, good husband, good wife all these things. This is why people are performing a karma, to get some blessing. Many time people come and say, “Swamiji my son is sick. Please give blessing.” “Swamiji my daughter is sitting for her final exam. Please give blessings. She can…” This is normally what people are interested in. They don’t realize that you can get such a blessing… just like the Kuveras, the brothers they are very wealthy, thay had the some shelter from Lord Shiva, but they became puffed up, and as a result, they became neglectful of their real purpose of life. But they got such a blessing they could see Krishna face to face. Who can imagine, you see… which they were really grateful for. They actually felt that “There’s no greater friend to us than Narada Muni.” They might have first thought “We have been cursed. This is very bad. Narada Muni is very harsh on us.” But subsequently they could see that justice and the mercy of Narada muni’s curse. That he actually gave them the greatest blessing in disguise. So this is the actual position that we should be hankering not for giving some punya which is a temporary result from which we can make some mistake and fall down, you see. Of course, we should always avoid papa or sinful activity like illicit sex, gambling, intoxication, meat, fish, egg, onion, garlic eating. We should eat Krishna prasadam and avoid the other things. We should engage ourselves always in the service of Radha-Govinda, of Rukmini, Krishna, Satyabhama, Jagannatha, Subhadra and Balarama. You are fortunate here we are worshipping Krishna and Subadra and Baladeva which also shows Krishna in a very intimate and personal relationship with His so called relatives who are nothing but His own expansions and energies which He’s having this lila for His own happiness and to attract the fallen souls. We should take that as our goal, not to do any punya, not to do any papa, not to do any pious activity for some material results, not to do any impious activity, which will bring us suffering. We should engage rather in pure devotion.

what is the actual position of a bhagavata.

Vrtrasura took the demon’s body, actually he was a bhagavata. He was Citraketu in a previous birth. And he was cursed by Parvati to take birth as a demon because of some inadvertent statement. So… but Krishna says that na me bhaktaḥ viṇaśyati uh… praṇaśyati, that My devotee is never destroyed. So because Citraketu was cursed, that is of course a very unfortunate thing materially speaking, but because he was a pure bhagavata, that even that curse took the form of a blessing and he could achieve liberation and perfection as a pure associate of the Lord in his next birth itself, in one birth, where Indra, he regained his position, but that was after all a material position. To be Indra has got its limitations. At the end of his life then again he has to suffer his karmas. This is the situation.

So therefore we are given all these stories and all these examples in the sastra so that we can understand what is the actual position of a bhagavata. That a pure devotee of the Lord is in the most exalted position, you see. So a pure devotee is not performing karmas.

The Demon Devotee

Devatas although they are devotees of the Lord, some of the sages they are also Mayavadis, or they are impersonalists. They might not be in bhakti yoga. They may be in jnana yoga or astanga yoga or some other form of yoga or in karma kanda many are there. So they are dear to the Lord, but they are not considered necessarily to be devotees. So more dear to them are the demigods. But demigods just like Indra, he approached the Lord that He wanted to defeat that one demon Vrtrasura, but… so the Lord said that, “You can defeat him. This is the way. But Vrtrasura is more fortunate than you are because you are asking that he be defeated so that you can continue with your material happiness. For maintaining your material position you are asking My help. But he is asking that even if he dies, he wants to return to me as a eternal devotee. So actually between the two of you, although I am answering your prayer, and his prayer, but he is more advanced than even you, although he is in the body of a demon.”

Render service to the devotees of the Lord.

Lord Caitanya manifested his mahaprakasa… Lord Caitanya after the age of fourteen when He began His harinam sankirtan movement… when he came back from Gaya after the departure of Jagannath Misra from this world, then one day Advaita Gosai could sense… He actually realized who Lord Caitanya was. That’s a whole other long history, and Lord Caitanya, He came in a specific mood where Lord Caitanya… something, One day He just came and sat down on the bed of the Deities, and Advaita Gosai with his transcendental vision could see that the Lord was in His original mood that His mood as a devotee, He wasn’t in that mood today. This particular day He was in the mood as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, His original form, and so Advaita Goswami, He started to take tulasi and worship… worship the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya.

namo brahmaṇya-devāya

go-brāhmaṇa-hitāya ca

jagad-dhitāya kṛṣṇāya

govindāya namo namaḥ

and all of the other devotees, they at first they were amazed that, “How is it that Advaita Goswami is worshipping Lord Caitanya as Krishna Himself?” and then Lord Caitanya, He revealed His transcendental glory to all of the devotees where they could actually see that He was none other than the Supreme Personality of Godhead, had come in the form of devotee, but He was actually Krishna, Himself, and then different demigods, Sukadeva Goswami the different demigods they came to worship Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

The Ganges came personified. The Ganges River with her carrier. She rides on… I believe it’s a dolphin. She came to worship Caitanya Mahaprabhu and then Lord Caitanya he started to reveal the different identity of His different devotees.

He revealed to Srivasa that he was actually Narada muni. He revealed to Murari Gupta that He, Caitanya was Sri Ramacandra and Murari Gupta was his eternal devotee, Hanuman. That is why he could only worship Ramacandra even though he tried to worship Krishna. When Murari Gupta saw that he fainted. He… unconscious. In this way Lord Caitanya was benedicting different devotees. For twenty-one hours they had the kirtan, which we meditate upon every night when we sing kiba jaya jaya gauracandra aratika sobhe. That twenty-one hour mahaprakasa aarti, that is especially the subject of our meditation when we do the evening arati.

So Then Lord Caitanya suddenly called “Bring that Kholavecha Sridhara.” and the devotees, they went.
“Kholavecha Sridhar, the hawker, the peddler on the streets, bring him?”

“Bring him.”

So everyone knew he was a devotee, but why Lord Caitanya was bringing him, they were puzzled. So then they… the few devotees went to get him. They said, “Kholavecha Sridhar, Lord Caitanya is requesting that you immediately come to see Him.”

“Lord Caitanya!? Gauranga Mahaprabhu, see me!?”

He fainted right on the spot. Couldn’t… it was too much for him. So they picked him up and carried him all the way to Srivasangan and to Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Placing him before Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu then, Kholavecha Sridhara looked, and there he saw that Lord Caitanya was more brilliant than thousands of suns and on his side was Advaita Gosvami… excuse me. On His side was Nityananda prabhu holding umbrella. There was uh, the devotees waving camara, and then all around, there were these devotees all effulgent.

The whole material world disappeared in the presence of Caitanya Mahapra… you could only see the form of the Lord and His devotees. The complete transcendental glory was only visible. The material world was no longer visible in the presence of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Just as you cannot see the stars in the presence of the sun, so the material reflections of the spiritual world disappeared in the presence of Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu then asked Kholavecha Sridhar that “You have been worshipping Me for so… and the Ganges so faithfully. So now I want to give you a benediction. You tell Me what you want. I will give you… you may have residence in the… you may have a huge kingdom… you may have a huge kingdom where you can reign and everyone will follow you.”

Kholavecha Sridhar said “Prabhu, master I don’t want a kingdom.”

“I’m giving you a kingdom!”

“I don’t want a kingdom.”

“Alright you can take residence in the heavenly planets as one of the demigods!”

“I don’t want to go to the heavenly planets.”

“I will give you mukti , liberation. You may have liberation!”

Kholavecha Sridhar said, “My lord , I don’t want liberation.”

“Liberation from the three modes of material nature, from the three miseries, complete liberation.”

“My Lord, sorry but I do not want liberation.”

“Then what do you want. You can have whatever you want!” Just see, these demigods they are praying to the lord. But in the end they are going to answer the creation and they can do their material duties properly. Of course they are all devotees and we respect them. But here Kholavecha Sridhar has shown a quality which is beyond even the greatest sages who desire liberation, or those demigods who desire to have material benediction. Kholavecha Sridhar was not desiring any of these. What was he desiring?

When Caitanya Mahaprabhu said “So what do you want?” Kholavecha Sridhar said “Kindly give me that benediction that whenever you appear I can supply the vegetables, bananas and banana leaf plates and all Your vegetable needs. I simply want to see that smiling mischievous face of that young Brahmana Nimai Pandit who is coming. I simply want it and if I am not able to and if I am unworthy to serve You wherever You are then at least allow me to serve Your pure devotees and allow me to render service to the devotees of the Lord.”

Then Caitanya Mahaprabhu in front of all of the devotees who were performing kirtan and arati is going on, then He said “Kholavecha Sridhar! I am benedicting you, you may have pure Krishna prema – that thing even the demigods, even Shiva even Brahma they find it difficult to have – they are hankering for it eagerly, you may have pure love for Krishna!”

Then the devotees went wild and they are jumping up and chanting “Haribol! Haribol!” This is the nature

Without a chace for Maya

by hearing from them about Krishna consciousness we forget our miseries, that in this festival whenever I heard from the advanced Vaisnavas I could forget my miseries, but that they somehow or another blessed me and all the other devotees so that we can be engaged the whole year in pure Krishna consciousness so intently and so enthusiastically that we may maintain that concentration without any deviation, without a chance for maya.

Like that the same position may be there but they change in their attitude from sense gratification to devotional service.

What is Bhagavat?

Prabhupad describes that Bhagavad-gita means spoken by Krishna and Srimad-Bhagavatam means spoken about Krishna. So by hearing the glories of Krishna, by hearing the Lord’s… glories of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, we can actually forget about all the sufferings. Our mind no longer is tuned in to all those sufferings of this material world. Rather it is tuned in directly to that eternal bliss coming from the spiritual world. So we simply have to decide where we want to tune in to? And when we see that we are getting static, we are tuned in to the wrong channel, and we see that our mind starts to become disturbed, starts to become in a impatient… impatient state, if we start to become impatient to again hear for more discussions about Krishna, impatient to hear more about devotional service, well, that’s a very good sign. In fact that is the beginning of spiritual life.

dharmah svanusthitah pumsam

visvaksena-kathasu yah

notpadayed yadi ratim

srama eva hi kevalam

When we start to become eager to hear about Krishna, eager to hear about how we can render devotional service, that means that our spiritual life is in a proper position. And if we are not eager, if we are not desirous, if that taste is not yet developed, that means that we are still in a most neophyte stage.

The ultimate aim – Pure devotion

Material life… you may not make it, of course if you’re determined enough, you may still make it. At least you are heading in the right… therefore the sastras encourage, “Alright do… somehow or other do devotional service.” You are at least going in the right direction. But then, there is also the instruction that,

kṛṣṇa-bhakta-niṣkāma, ataeva ‘śānta’

bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kāmī sakali ‘aśānta’

That one should try to aim at the ultimate, pure devotion, you see, without any separate tinge, and it is very complex, it’s not… may not just be, you see… it’s described, may not just be that “Oh, it’s pure tama or pure raja, or pure sattva.” There may be two parts sattva, one part tama, and two parts raja. It may be, you know. It can maybe… or, add 27 different combinations, and then again three, get 81 different combinations. It may… a devotee may have you know, so many different kinds subtle, little, things there. It may actually be zero tama, zero raja, zero sattva, but then a third of a part of sattva, slight mix is there. Just even then a tinge of attachment for this particular thing over that. So of course that’s all very complicated by seeing, therefore to just simplify the whole thing we try to just understand what are the eight prayers of Lord Caitanya.

don’t want to feel satisfaction over material comfort

I am serving Krishna, then why I am not getting my material facility?” you see. There might be that type of feeling, “Why Krishna is not making me comfortable. I am serving Him.”

If we start to relate and expect Krishna to give us a comfortable material situation in exchange for devotional service, it can bring in a tinge of rajo-guna. Then our motivation… we’ll be happy in our devotional service if we are materially comfortable, and if we are materially uncomfortable we will feel some dissatisfaction. We don’t want to feel satisfaction over material comfort. That has nothing to do with pure love for Krishna. We don’t care… we don’t want to feel dissatisfaction over material discomfort, you see. We have a body. You can’t help it feeling some amount of sensation over being materially, bodily, physically comfortable or uncomfortable. You can’t help feeling some sensation, but that… we don’t want that to be our standard for being satisfied or dissatisfied. Until we get pure love for Krishna we don’t want that flow of enthusiasm, of determination to ebb, to even decrease an iota through some self-satisfaction that, “Now I am comfortable.” Then we may get stuck up there, we may not get pure bhakti, we may not get pure love for Krishna.
