The dhiksha – A new birth

Once they surrender to Krishna and say, ”Krishna my life is yours. I want to serve you eternally.” The way that one does that is through Krishna’s pure devotee. One has to surrender to a devotee of Krishna as a spiritual master and accept initiation and serve that spiritual master following his instruction as being the absolute representative of Krishna. So initiation we give normally after a devotee is in a temple for six months. A devotee can cook, means he can prepare the thing like cutting vegetables, rolling the chapati or making the batter and things like that. But actually fire work the putting the thing on the fire and the final action that should be done by people who are initiated when you are offering it to the Deities because this is the panca-tantric ruling is there that the someone who is initiated they are able to serve Krishna.

They are… there Krishna says that “I accept someone who is initiated on My same spiritual level.” We can approach Krishna. We are born human being. Human being means that’s a material position. Krishna is not human. He is on transcendental platform. When we accept diksa that means we accept a new birth, Dvijatva. Second birth means that mother is sastra and father is guru. Then Krishna accepts us that now you are on a spiritual platform. That time we accept that we are not the body, we are the soul. Body is only our vehicle and we are serving in this way. So all these have many implications about diksa.

The Initiation should not be taken lightly, very serious

if a disciple can give a load to the spiritual master, then we can understand that the disciple by acting very nicely can actually free the spiritual master from any burden from himself. So that’s the least that a disciple can do and an advanced disciple can also help other junior disciples to become more Krishna conscious, more strict, more enthusiastic in their service which would be a very great service to the spiritual master. And if the Ganges has got some doubt about her capacity, we can understand that a spiritual master also who have a capacity, depending on how much mercy he gets from the spiritu… from Krishna, because Krishna is the only one that can ultimately neutralize. Just like you can put on some antiseptic on your sore; there is a limit how much that antiseptic, how many microorganism or infections it can neutralize, it is but one small micro part of a drop it can only be able to cover so many.

So Krishna is unlimited and he can give that unlimited potency to his pure devotee, to whatever extent he wants to, pure devotee off course takes the humble attitude and knows that uh, he will be at least partially responsible for all the reactions, and if he is irresponsible he can be helped fully to task. So it’s very serious, Krishna has unlimited potencies, spiritual master has to be very careful, so if disciples are very expert in keeping their Godbrothers Krishna Conscious that means that would enhance whatever capacity their spiritual master has for delivering more souls, by not over burdening. If he is over-burdened that means that with few fallen disciples whatever mercy he is getting from Krishna is being expended. Any if the disciples are all very serious then so many more disciples can be increased, without being a burden on the spiritual master excessively. So to make this Krishna conscious movement expand that means every disciple must be very careful to be strict and they should try to encourage others who are initiated to come up to the same platform. Initiation should not be taken lightly, very serious because it means if a person follows that person is guaranteed to reach Krishna.

A short life in our whole eternal life

If people can develop the broader vision that what is life, that this life is just a short life in our whole eternal life and therefore we should act responsibly considering that this is just one life in our eternal life and this particular life… very wonderful opportunity for those who want to achieve the maximum happiness in this very life, is…. Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s very special benediction is that in this very life you can achieve Krishna Consciousness, you can achieve complete perfection, actually it’s a great benediction, because I don’t know if the modern-day people will be so patient to have to wait several lives, you see. At least the opportunity to achieve in this life is very attractive to everyone.

Better late than never!

Question: Mala Sakti: Now only I came to devotional service at the age of 49. How to get spiritual and I am preparing for initiation. That is the question. I came at half age, so I am feeling!

Guru maharaj: Better late than never! Ha! Ha! So, we saw how Mukunda was lamenting that he had wasted much time listening to the mayawadis. So if you lament how your 49 years you were not spending in devotional service, then you can use the remaining time whatever you have, in Krsna’s service. I came to Krsna consciousness when I was 19. I am lamenting that the first 19 years were wasted! And some people are so fortunate, they are born in Krsna consciousness, but some of them don’t understand how fortunate they are! So, if you take devotional service as a rare jewel, and try to use every remaining moment in devotional service, then you will achieve all success. Haribol!

Initiation vows…

Question: If a devotee is following principles and chanting 16 rounds, but his job promotes sinful activities, for eg owning a gas station in the US and the shop that sells meat products. Please tell us what is recommended for him to take initiation?

Guru maharaj: In Fiji, a particular family owned a grocery store and some of the products in the grocery were meat derivatives. One of the brothers wanted to take initiation. So Srila Prabhupada told him that he should calculate what the meat income was, and except that percent, donate it for prasad distribution or something. Then he gave him initiation. So some formula has to be worked out if this gas station sells meat products. Ideally if they avoid any meat products, a gas station is supposed to sell gas, maybe they sell other snacks like potato chips and so on. So they could avoid meat products. I think. Anyway, we have to take up on a individual basis, what products he sells which are meat type or how he can avoid that or how he can purify that.

Being initiated

“Being initiated, Prabhupada said, is a glorious thing. It means one is going back to Godhead in this lifetime. Of course, they have to follow the vows that they have taken and at the same time it means they are being accepted by the disciplic succession. The guru is acting as an agent. So that is the responsibility also to see that the parampara is carried forward. Just as we read today in the Bhagavatam how the Manus are protecting the world, Prabhupada wanted that the ISKCON movement would be known as the savior of the world.”

How one initiated devotee can connect to spiritual master in the physical absence of the spiritual master?

Guru maharaj: Guru has gone back to Vaikuntha or is not in Guwahati and gone to another place? (The devotee said: Not in Guwahati). I am trying to start a ‘E Care’ for my disciples. This class is being broadcast on Facebook. I have Facebook in English, Bengali and other languages. I don’t have in Assamese. We need volunteers to be responsible for the Assamese page. We have Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Bengali, English, Russian. Now we need Assamese. Anyone wants to volunteer? Anyway now we have Facebook, Twitter, email. So disciples can write to me and get a reply. Sometimes I delay but that is why I want to establish the E Care system so that there is no delay. A number of devotees from Bengaluru, Chennai and England are working on this project.

“It’s not enough that we’re born in a Hindu family, or that we even accept guru or initiation, or born in a family of a devotee. We have to actually understand the science.”

Taking Initiation

“Taking of initiation is not only taking vows, doing personal practices, but also to dedicate and try to do the service to Lord Caitanya as much as possible. We are very fortunate that we have Prabhupada to serve and he was sent by Krishna to spread this message all over the world. So we are coming in the line of Prabhupada and previous acharyas and we want to try to do something so that Prabhupada will be proud of us.”
