Hari Naam is the Real Shelter

Haridas Thakur was preaching to the people in the prison that you are very fortunate because here you can realise that in the material world we are all prisoners. this is durga. durga .. dur means difficult and ga means prison. this is a difficult prison to get out of . so now knowing that you are actually prisoner better to chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. in this way you can actually achieve your real liberation from material bondage. in this way you can actually achieve the highest perfection of life . so in this way induced all the prisoners to chant the Hare Krishna and the whole prison house was chanting.

Lord Chaitanya’s sankirtan 🌴 Tree🎄

Lord Chaitanya explains that he is the gardener and he is the tree of the sankirtan movement. And from the main trunk of Lord Chaitanya various other bigger trunks like Nityananda, Advaita, Gadadhara come out. And then so many branches have come and then so many branchlets and twigs and so on. So, Prabhupada explained that we are one of the branches of Lord Chaitanya’s tree and under this branch there are so many twigs and leaves are there. But as a branch of Lord Chaitanya’s tree founded for satisfying the desire of the previous acharyas.

The Unification of the world through Holy name

When Krishna was present, that there was a unification, and we want to bring back that kind of unification by bringing back Krishna. So how we can bring back Krishna in this age, is by bringing His holy name into the universe , because there is no difference between God and His holy name. So when that vibration of the Lord’s name is pervasive everywhere, then automatically by His presence, then there can actually be that kind of a spiritual harmony or unification in the world, unification has become a bad word now. The spiritual purification will take effect, that we should tell people about Krishna consciousness, we should practice Krishna consciousness, and this way we should try to bring people to the shelter of Krishna. Actually everybody is a part of Krishna, they are all eternal spirit souls, they are part of the supreme soul, they are not the material body. And people, they can come to that awareness, by participating in this chanting and Krishna conscious process of… we hope that we can get the cooperation of the sober minded people.

Meditate on the lotus feet of Nitai -Gaura, to get special strength

Devotees, when they do sankirtana, they should meditate on the lotus feet of Balarama and Krishna, of Nitai-Gaura, to get special strength. When there’s a difficulty, then they can take shelter and chant the holy names and, pray that they can get more, strength for serving the lotus feet. This is a special meaning also of Baladeva, Balarama. Krishna… Narottama dasa Thakura prayed hā hā prabhu nityānanda premānanda-sukhī kṛpāvalokaṇa koro āmi baḍo duḥkhī, that “Lord Nityananda, You are filled with transcendental ecstasies. I’m always in a miserable material suffering mentality. Please have Your mercy upon me, that I can just… immediately because I’m so unfortunate.”

Mantra means to deliver the mind, to uplift the consciousness.

Do you chant Hare Krishna ? Have you tried it? Why don’t you try it? See if you can get any effect, get any benefit. Mantra means to deliver the mind, to uplift the consciousness. One doesn’t have to be a… The temple is the place where it is very convenient to chant, it’s… it’s set aside for that purpose, we can hear and we can chant and we can read but it’s not limited to the temples. We can chant in the park, we can chant on the bus, we can chant while we are walking, we can chant… there is so many spare moments, instead of… instead of putting our ear into a ghetto blaster… and uh, it’s not going to purify us, its adding more fuel to the fire of our anxieties, and dissatisfactions, that uh, in this way it is very easy to purify the consciousness, and person comes to that transcendental platform very easily.

So, one doesn’t have to be tied into the so called organized aspect of it. Even a very free way one can chant anywhere, anytime, this is the wonder and the benediction or the special gift of Lord Caitanya’s movement, that He wanted that people will be able to practice their own homes, but it is a… it is beneficial, it’s conducive for someone who wants to advance in the spiritual… life to the get the association of likeminded spiritual people. That provides a type of a atmosphere which is conducive for meditation and for spiritual practices. Once a person knows the basic he is little bit habituated or has learned the processes of meditation, well they can perform anywhere, anytime.

The ultimate purificatory rights..

purification is essential, the purificatory rights given in the Vedas are prescribed but in Kali yuga because the present age we are in, because people haven’t have the opportunity of all those purificatory rights, they’re an aid but they are not the end in themselves, it is recommended that one should chant the names of Krishna but the names of God, and that this the ultimate purificatory right or the ultimate purification is to constantly chant the mantras or the names of the Lord, so there are unlimited names of God, nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija-sarva-śaktis. So one may chant the name Krishna, or Govinda, or Rama, Hare Krishna or one may chant some other bonafide name of God, but especially chanting the holy names, this is recommended in this age.

So we have been handed down this Hare Krishna chant as being a very effective and very powerful combination of the names of the Lord, which are especially recommended for this age, but we don’t say that these are the only names of God somebody can chant. If they have other names they can do that. That will be more effective than any other purification in this particular age, for spiritual progress.

Geared for the golden age

Big tennis stars and other people, they do this yogic exercises, it’s is very healthy. So, if they keep going, then they can gradually get up to platform of meditation. But actually, that process is especially for the materially absorbed mind of the conditional soul, who is fixed within this bodily conception of life, you see. But if somebody can understand that they’re not the body, at least philosophically if they can come to that conception then there’s no need of going through all the exercises, one can directly engage in meditation by chanting

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna

Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Hare Rama Hare Rama

Rama Rama Hare Hare

In fact, because time is very short we don’t want to waste any time. We don’t want that we embark on a spiritual path which there is no guarantee at all for any success in this life. If one embarks on that ordinary hatha-yoga process, there is no guarantee one will be able to actually achieve God realization or anything close to it in this life. It’s a very gradual, slower process which was geared for a much longer time periods than what we have today. It was geared for the golden age Satya-yuga. In this present disturbed age, a special facility has been given by chanting.

Mind during Chanting

Question: When you chant, your mind’s always better? Does it ever roam?

Jayapataka Swami: In the beginning the mind goes here and there. And one has to just like a little puppy dog running here and there, and you have to bring the mind back to chanting. Then you see in the beginning I could uh, remember that there were times when I could be chanting and my mind would think of other things. And although I was chanting so many beads my mind would be going you know but then I would gradually… Prabhupada trained that we had to bring our mind back.

See now when I chant I can’t do anything else. If I chant I can’t think of anything else. I can… if I start thinking of anything else I will stop counting on the beads. Automatically and if I am trying to make some other program or someone is chanting immediately my mind will be drawn to that chanting. Soon as I hear Krishna’s name my mind fixes.

Receiving the mantra

Dhruva Maharaja was searching for Krishna. He couldn’t find Him until he was given a mantra. When he received the mantra “om namo bhagavate vasudevaya”, he chanted, then he could finally achieve Krishna. One has to receive a mantra, a name of Krishna, from a bona fide spiritual master, and this has been happening since time immemorial.

‘Man’ means mind ‘tra’ means deliverance. Mantra means to deliver the mind, so thinks Hare Krishna is the great mantra because… there are many mantras which are secret which cannot be chanted by everyone and anyone because there are so many rules and regulations for chanting those: gayatri mantras bija mantras, but this is called maha-mantra because any one can chant or repeat. The process is simple you just have to repeat,

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare

Chanting Process

So you just start. Even now, you chant your four rounds it takes half an hour a day. Or some day you might be doing ten or twelve. Either by count on your fingers, or count with beads, or count with a clicker counter, you fix a minimum and then do that when it’s comfortable, when you know you can do it, then you raise it up. Do the next… do a little bit more. When you get to sixteen, you don’t have to raise it anymore. It’s enough. Like that you try to get… then you get a rhythm. You get a spiritual rhythm which will help you build up more and more strength.

Ultimate test

“It’s not how gloriously one live but how gloriously one dies. If he dies crying, if he dies evacuating, this is not glorious. And then, if one dies chanting Hare Krishna leaves his body in through devotion, peaceful, that is glorious, that is human life. People do not understand, they think a person’s greatness is in how he is living; we say that the person’s greatness is not only in how he is living, how he is dying. That is the ultimate test. That would show that, how actually he lived. This Krishna Conscious movement is to form people into the perfect life and a perfect death, which means eternal life.”

Process of chanting

“A devotee tries to remain detached from material things, and by chanting, hearing, reading and associating with the devotees, he tries to allow one’s natural love for Krishna to manifest. He prays to Nitai Gaura for Their mercy and fervently asks, “When will I have pure love for You?” He begs the Lord for shelter just as Lord Caitanya prayed in Sikshastaka, ‘Please have Me fixed as a speck of dust at Your lotus feet’.”

Devotee is Always chanting

“Actually in humility, the devotee never feels himself to be so strong that he doesn’t need constantly the mercy of Lord Krishna. Therefore, the devotee is always chanting …
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/
Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare”

Chanting Hare Krishna

“Chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, a neophyte may think this is not very comfortable. “I’d rather watch video, or do something else.” But this is an austerity we take because this is something very conducive for our spiritual life. Of course we are not very blissful because our heart is covered by so many contamination. Once the contamination are cleansed away, then we find chanting is very blissful.”

Feeling Spiritual Joy

“You know what happens to a flame when the wind is on – it becomes very flickering. Some people try to make every surrounding very peaceful to achieve that quiet mind. But that is temporary because when from outside some disturbance comes the mind will be disturbed. But when that calmness is brought from within by inner spiritual strength by chanting of Hare Krishna, then the mind becomes steady even if outside there are troubles. Therefore the devotee feels spiritual joy and dances and laughs.”

unwanted things are destroyed

“In Kali Yuga, it is recommended we chant the Maha Mantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare; Iti sodasakam nam nam kali kalmasha. Kali Santarana Upanishad says we chant these 16 names Sodasakam naam naam, kali kalmasha nashanam – all the evil effects of the Kali yuga – the inequalities, the suffering, the hatred, the prejudice, the terrorism – all these things are destroyed.”

“Bhakti Vinoda prabhu charane podiya, Sei Hari nama mantra loilo maagiya; Jeev Jaago… So Bhakti Vinoda Thakur says, I fall at the lotus feet of the Lord and I beg to get the medicine – the Harinaam kirtan. And I got it! I got it! I got it! I got it! I got it! Bhakti Vinoda Thakur, in these words, he said I fell at the feet of the Lord, I begged for the medicine and I got it! So that is what we need to do. We fall at Lord Caitanya’s lotus feet, we fall at Pancha Tattva’s lotus feet, we beg for the medicine, we beg for the Harinam and by Their mercy, we can get it.”
