The dubious money

something that will last not only one generation but for generations together, but something that comes by some dubious… way or simply by some magical way, it doesn’t stay, it is a type of illusion. Just like one man in England, he won lottery ticket, 500,000 pounds. He became so happy, he was a long short man, that means he was one of the kulies who loads the ships. So he became so happy, that he quit his job, now he is almost a millionaire you can say, …half a millionaire. So he started having big parties for all of his other, those porters who load the ships and he started to spend money like anything, giving everyone huge parties and drinks, and he would give prostitutes money, 500 pounds, 1000 just like that. Within 3 months he had expended all his money. Within 3 months he had been so continuously drunk, from drinking ah… whisky, that he had not one time came to a common practical sense of mind. By the time all his money was gone, he was going to his friends begging that give me 20 pounds so I can get something to eat. So they saying, “What you just won half a million pound and now you are coming begging, What’s wrong with you?” He said that, “Well, if I had stopped drinking long enough to think about it, I might have spend it in some another way, but ah… I didn’t have the sense at that time.” Now he has no job, and no money, and all his friends are saying, “What you are doing just bumming off us?” So like this the people they get something on a tamasa, but if they don’t have the proper education, they don’t have the proper association and training and guidance, they may misuse it.

The mahima of Makundas

In fact anything you do with Krishna you come out Just like there are some people and anything you do with them everything comes according to astrological science, there are some people called makundas anything you do with that people comes out to be a total wipeout. In fact if you see them as the first thing when you get up in the morning the rest of the day is supposed to be a total bummer or total kind of a horrible thing. There is a story about you know this , it is kind of off the topic but, it is kind of interesting, it is the kind of Gopal that touches on that one time the King he woke up looked out of his room and just saw beneath his palace there was the house of Gopal. He is a courtier. He looked to him and the very first person he saw that morning when he got up, rubbed his eyes, opened his eyes, there is Gopal in his veranda. And he said you know, “Hello Gopal, how are you?” So then Gopal said,”Maharaj, please accept my namaskar. My obeisances to you. So then, that day the king was being shaved and for the first time his barber cut him. Seventeen years the barber had been shaving him. And that day he got cut. Seventeen years he had never been cut. So then king decided that the very first person I saw today was Gopal. Actually he must be one of this Makundas. Having him in my kingdom is causing so many people misfortune. They are waking up and seeing him and their whole days are being ruined. So I should save all the people from suffering and have him beheaded. So he called Gopal and told him, “You are going to be beheaded.” Gopal said “Why? My Lord! Of course you are the King whatever you want to do no one can argue but could you kindly tell me why?” And then the king said, explained that the barber said “I have never cut anyone ever in the seventeen years. Just today I cut, it is an amazing thing.” So the king explained that this is the thing that has happened. So I have come to the conclusion that you must be a Makunda. So therefore you have to, it is not Mukunda it is Makunda they are different. So therefore, I am going to have you beheaded and save my kingdom from having to have your inauspicious presence. So then Gopal said, “Well then there is someone else who should also get the same fate. I shouldn’t be the only one. There is someone who is a greater Makunda than me.” “Who is that?” ”So, well my Lord, the very first person that I saw today when I woke up was you and I am about to be beheaded. So the king thought, so of course there may be people who create bad influences but the Lord He is just the opposite. Everything that happens with Krishna is all good.

Krishna is all attractive

Someone might be attracted because Krishna is there, Krishna is all attractive, so the all attractive nature coming out but then until the person engages in cultivation of knowledge or performing some devotional service, then it is hard for them to get to a more refined state.

I remember that 10 years ago, no one even knew what reincarnation was. Now, if you ask people how many believe in reincarnation, you’d probably find that… has there been a Gallup Poll, how many believe in reincarnation? I know in Brazil, 90% believe in reincarnation, and it’s a Roman Catholic country (devotees laughing), and I think in America you’d probably find… I know in France 70 or 80% of people believe in reincarnation.

Real religion

What is called dharma? What is called education? That activity which is filled with good qualities, sadacara, good characteristic, where actually an attraction for the Supreme Personality of Godhead is created, that is known as real education. That is real religion.

So what happens like by giving your energy, you are giving your mind to the Lord by concentrating, by meditating, by offering to Him His own name, you directly bring yourself into His association then He gives Himself to you. He gives His love, His reciprocation He reveals His mysteries to you, depending upon how much you’re really concentrating on Him.

Death is nothing to fear. At the time of death, this vehicle, this machine is no longer suitable to ride in. So now we have to take a new machine. We get a new birth. So those who know the Vedas, the Vedic literatures of India, they know that according to one’s karma, he will suffer or enjoy in the next life.

“Normally, the conditioned soul tries to enjoy this material world. In the grhasta-asrama people adopt the pravriti-marga. If the grhastas can practice yukta-vairagya (by doing everything for Krishna’s pleasure), then their life will be perfected. I am happy that may of you have come with your spouse and that you are doing service to Krishna together as couple. This gives one great joy.”

Avoid dirty politics

You see, being initiated, Srila Prabhupada said, it is just the birth. After that one has to learn how to practice devotional service. The culture of the vaisnava is some system, how you deal with each other. We should not criticize each other, we should avoid any kind of dirty politics, we should respect all others and not expect any respect for ourselves. This is Lord Caitanya’s teaching, in the third verse of the Siksastakam.

Broader vision

“Vaisnava doesn’t want to see any one suffer. Vaishnava has a broader vision, beyond the body. The bodily suffering is due ultimately to our identification with the body. One should not just think how to relieve the immediate distress but how to permanently end it by giving spiritual knowledge.“

Yoghini Ekadasi

So today is Yogini Ekadasi, a special day when the Lord says this day, whoever observes this Ekadasi, He generally takes birth as His associate, in other words they ride high. So the Lord, He gives many facilities to return to Him. But the conditioned souls, they generally don’t take advantage. That is why we need to outreach people, so that they can understand about the Lord and His devotional service.

unwanted things are destroyed

“In Kali Yuga, it is recommended we chant the Maha Mantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare; Iti sodasakam nam nam kali kalmasha. Kali Santarana Upanishad says we chant these 16 names Sodasakam naam naam, kali kalmasha nashanam – all the evil effects of the Kali yuga – the inequalities, the suffering, the hatred, the prejudice, the terrorism – all these things are destroyed.”

Unlimited Mercy

“Lord Chaitanya has got unlimited mercy, unlimited forgiveness. So long as we actually try. If we become a hypocrite; at some point He has His limit, that He will no longer accept hypocrisy. But sincerely, if we give even the slightest bit try, but we make some mistake or we are very weak, that is not a big disqualification in Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s movement, because He is so kind!”

“Bhakti Vinoda prabhu charane podiya, Sei Hari nama mantra loilo maagiya; Jeev Jaago… So Bhakti Vinoda Thakur says, I fall at the lotus feet of the Lord and I beg to get the medicine – the Harinaam kirtan. And I got it! I got it! I got it! I got it! I got it! Bhakti Vinoda Thakur, in these words, he said I fell at the feet of the Lord, I begged for the medicine and I got it! So that is what we need to do. We fall at Lord Caitanya’s lotus feet, we fall at Pancha Tattva’s lotus feet, we beg for the medicine, we beg for the Harinam and by Their mercy, we can get it.”

Effect of mantra

“Mantra is just like fire, if you put your hand in fire you will be burned, in the same way if you chant the mantra properly, somehow or another if the vibration comes from the mouth, it will have its effect, therefore it’s not simply some type of artificial process, it is not an imposition on the mind, because otherwise it would not be possible that even without knowledge, even without practice, even if you are skeptical, even then by chanting, there’s an effect.”

It is very difficult to stay focused on the goal of going back to Krishna Although I try reading and also experience suffering but how do I increase my focus?

Krishna consciousness is a gradual process. We start by faith adhua shraddha. We hear from the authorities and then we start associating with devotees, then we start to practice Krishna consciousness, take initiation and then we start to eliminate the anarthas and then we get fixed in bhakti and then we gradually develop a taste or ruchi. We become very attached to Krishna and then we come to the stage of ecstatic love for Krishna and then when we see Krishna we get pure love of Krishna. So as your affection and love for Krishna increases, then you don’t ask such questions. You think how can I live so long without having the association of my wonderful Lord. I am not this body, I am a living force which is a part of Krishna. I am known as the jiva shakti. Sanatan Goswami, when he went to Lord Caitanya, at that time he was the prime minister of the empire of Hussain Shah and he said that people call me a great pandit but actually I am a fool because I don’t know what I am supposed to do, I don’t know who I am. So please enlighten me. So Lord Caitanya said, jivera svarup hoya nitya Krishnera das, that the living entity is eternally the servant of the Supreme Lord. So when we realized that then we won’t think it is hard to go with guru, Gauranga or Krishna. So it is a gradual process and you have to go step by step. When Parikshit maharaj was hearing the 10th canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam he had vowed that he would not eat or sleep before hearing the Srimad Bhagavatam. So I guess at least five days had gone by by that stage. Now what would we ask? I have to have a drink; can I sleep? But what did he say? Tell me some more about my wonderful Lord. Tell me what did my wonderful Lord do? Tell me more, tell me more. He was so eager. So, we have to develop that enthusiasm to hear about the Lord.

What gives you enthusiasm to glorify even under such difficult conditions?

I was thinking Lord Caitanya He did not reveal to the people of Navadvip who He was, only few people knew. After ten years He went to the other side of the river to see Rupa and Sanatan Goswami. So the word spread that Gaura Hari is there! Gaura Hari Gaura Hari, Gaura Hari, Gaura Hari, Gaura Hari, Haribol! Mothers who were cooking milk, they neglected the milk and came running. The people whether young or old, men or women, when they hear Lord Caitanya came, they came running and then they were on this side and so went to the boat. The boatman said, wait, wait, don’t overload. But no one was waiting and the boat sunk and there was water up to the knees. People began swimming. The Ganges is normally saffron colour but it became black that day because of all people’s hair. All were chanting Gauranga Gaura Hari, Gauranga Gaura Hari, Gauranga Gaura Hari! So such were the pastimes of Lord Caitanya and the more we hear these pastimes, the more we want to serve the Lord. Although my body may not keep up now but my desire to serve Srila Prabhupad and Lord Caitanya is ever increasing! Haribol!

How can I learn to depend on guru and Krishna in every circumstance?

He is asking, ‘how to?’ How to depend on Krishna? These ‘how to’ questions, all these things are in the natural process of devotional service. Ho w to get a taste for chanting? How to practice dev service? It is in Nectar Of Devotion, it is in every book we read. And we develop such a thing gradually. But if you try to develop these qualities, depending on Krishna, associate or follow the footsteps of people that are already depending on Krishna, and then you will be able to do it very quickly. But if you don’t have anyone to follow, that depends on Krishna, then you can practice yourself. But there could be a few slips on the way. You know, if you use your intelligence, then what can you depend on? By selective process you can see that there is nothing that is dependable. There is no one else who is fixed, other than Krishna. So naturally we should depend on Him. If we depend on something else, the president, your member of the legislative assembly, Ha!, your member of parliament, your doctor, all have their limitations. Only Krishna is unlimited. So if you depend on Him, He reciprocates and He protects us. If we depend on something else, like Draupadi, she was holding on to her saree and Dushaasan was pulling. He is a maharathi, she is a woman. Then she just realized I can’t fight it, I have to depend on Krishna. So she raised her hands and said Keshava! Krishna! Keshava! Krishna! and her crying was so sincere, that Krishna became her unlimited saree! So she could not be disgraced in the Kuru assemble. Bhima, at that moment he vowed that he would really kill this guy. Kshatriyas they do such things.
