What’s pleasing to Krishna?

Follow in the footsteps of great souls. But if we don’t follow their examples, and we just want to do our own thing, but we want to rubber stamp it is devotional service. It is not the same. Had Arjuna told Krishna, ’I won’t follow your instructions. I am going to go and become a mendicant Vaishnava. Wear tilak and chant and go around the forest. I don’t want to fight Kurusketra.’ Would he have been a greater devotee? Or would he have been a bogus sadhu? We have to understand that whatever we do, we have to do it with this idea, ‘What is pleasing to Krishna?’

*Thinking, feeling & Willing*

If you really desire something, you can get it. Actually, this is also mentioned in the Bhagavad-gītā, that thinking, feeling, willing…this is a characteristic of the soul. If a person really wants something, if they have the appropriate good karma to get it, then they can get it. If not exactly like that depends on their karma they got, good karma or bad karma, how much they’ll get. It’s not only desire, but a combination of desire and what you deserve, both. But, in the spiritual life, there’s no question we can do anything to deserve it. If we desire to serve Kṛṣṇa and we’re rendering devotional service, He appreciates our devotional service and He grants us His mercy whenever He wants to, so that we can fulfil our desire to serve Him.

The Transcendental perspective

Someone loses their transcendental knowledge, either due to reducing their devotional service and losing their shelter or due to offences. Then once you lose that transcendental knowledge it’s very easy to act in a most foolish way. Somebody with transcendental knowledge cannot understand at all how a person can act in such a foolish way, as people in material understanding act. That’s why the Bhagavad-gītā also states that the time of awakening for a self-realized soul is the time of sleeping for a person in material consciousness; and the time of awakening for a person in material consciousness is the time of sleeping for a self-realized soul. So, a person in transcendental knowledge, they have a transcendental perspective on things.

*The Real Winner*

The Lord is eternally above all of these struggles in the material world, and people need to be conscious of Him. And that’s the duty of the devotees, is their bringing this consciousness to people. They don’t have this consciousness. They’re very much focussed on the struggle in the material world. So they need, like Gajendra, to come to understand that sometimes you’re going to win, sometimes you’re going to lose…but if you take shelter of Kṛṣṇa you’re the real winner. You’re the real victor. Because Kṛṣṇa is the only one who can give the complete shelter, no-one else.

The mystical power

*

Some people do a little austerity to levitate, but they have to have a rubber cushion, because they get up about three inches, they get so affected by their levitation that they just suddenly break their meditation, phoom! They plop down on the ground. From the fall, they’d break their bone; so they have to have rubber foam to cushion their fall. In other words, it is not very effective, even if you go up 6 feet. Viswamitra could create planets; he could go on any planet he wanted, by his mystic power. But still he was not satisfied in the end. So therefore the real solution of course is not to try to have mystic powers.

Krishna – The origin of all happiness.

India where the things are more spiritually connected, that here definitely people if they just allow themselves to be engaged in various types of ah… devotional services, the will find that, this is very interesting, and this ah… very fulfilling and at the same time they will become great pundits, they will become very learned in all aspects of vedic culture and they become very happy, very blissful. One Christian Arch Bishop in South America, he asked me, “That why is that all your followers are always happy?” They donot mind. Same one Cardinal asked Prabhupada, “That why is that all your followers are always happy?” Even the… wife of the President of Ecuador, she said that, “one thing is I noticed that your Hare Krishna devotees, they are always happy.” Because wherever Krishna is there, he is anandamoyi vyasat, He is the origin of all happiness. So even though there was some crisis yesterday, still somehow or other the devotees were happy, by Krishna’s mercy.

The attributes of Hari….

The word hari conveys various meanings, but the chief import of the word is that He (the Lord) vanquishes everything inauspicious and takes away the mind of the devotee by awarding pure transcendental love. By remembering the Lord in acute distress one can be free from all varieties of miseries and anxieties. Gradually the Lord vanquishes all obstacles on the path of devotional service of a pure devotee, and the result of nine devotional activities, such as hearing and chanting, becomes manifested.

By His personal features and transcendental attributes, the Lord attracts all psychological activities of a pure devotee. Such is the attractive power of Lord Sri Kṛṣṇa. The attraction is so powerful that a pure devotee never hankers for any one of the four principles of religion. These are the attractive features of the transcendental attributes of the Lord.

consider ourselves to be aspiring devotees but not pure Devotees

we don’t really consider ourselves to be devotees in the purest sense. Out of humility we always consider ourselves to be aspiring devotees. To be a real devotee, that means to have Krishna-prema, meant to be a completely a pure devotee, that is such an exalted position. There is nothing to do with this material world. Therefore, this material lust, material desire do not affect. Even someone who is on the stage of bhava, which is considered to be preliminary liberation. Already maybe liberated due to karmas, but sill 1% uh, tinge is there. We find from the prayers of Yamunacarya. He prays that “Whenever I think about, sex life, my face becomes bitter and I spit.”

Prabhupada… there’s two points, one is the spontaneous, detachment, otherwise…other is that even though he was such an exalted acarya, on the level of bhava, still the thought came and he admitted it came in his mind. Now that thought, whenever they come in the mind, it might come, Krishna Prema, means that the connection with the material mind and body is cut, just indirect link is there. Just… basically at that time, That time… of course there is no danger at all of the senses, but even at the stage of bhava, where one is not attracted to all the sense gratification, one is completely attracted to Krishna just because till the material… there is a mind which has the connection with the body. Sometimes when they come up with some off the wall proposal, which is immediately disgusting… just… even the thought is rejected. So su…such devotees, who don’t awe with the material desires, so since the thought is there one has to be careful.

Have an appetite for Krishna consciousness

We have to concentrate in the beginning until we get a taste, after that the concentration comes easily. Just like when we have a big feast in front of you, it doesn’t take a lot of effort to concentrate on it. Right? The taste is there. If you are sick, if you have got some bad you know, diarrhea or you have got some stomach or liver problem, even in a big feast you don’t have any appetite, we are not interested. So why we don’t have an appetite for Krishna consciousness is because we are diseased. So we have to concentrate to get out of the diseased condition.

The demigodsare crying to come here

These great mystic yogis, the great demigods, it’s described in the Vedas that they are actually crying, they are crying that if only they could come down here to this material world, at this time… to the planet Earth at this time when Lord Caitanya’s movement is manifested, because what would ordinarily take a long time to go step by step, now there’s a special facility that without all this stages one can directly go to the top-most platform. One can go to the transcendental platform and from there one can further develop, bypassing all these relative material platforms. So, factually speaking they are crying to come here.

Start from post graduate – bhakti yoga

the devotee knows automatically about the yoga process, and knows actually the topmost yoga understanding. So this begins from understanding that, “We are not the body.” and therefore we immediately transcend all of the preliminary things which are meant to get a person out of bodily consciousness. We already start from above that. Just like if you start from your post graduate course. You don’t have to go to the primary, secondary, you can immediately start university level, you see. If a person already has that accumulated knowledge you don’t have to go through it. So all those lower levels, are just to bring a person out of the body consciousness; so as soon as one experiences happiness or Krishna consciousness above this material plane and one desires in that direction, then immediately one can perceive uh, that, uh, that “This happiness is beyond the body, therefore I am not the body.” Therefore we pray to Lord Nityananda to bless us.

Enthusiasm one’s own desire

Enthusiasm one’s own desire* Enthusiasm is something that is just… just somehow or another, like the person riding… running in a race. How do you become enthusiastic? Someone… either through instruction, through criticism, through joking, through something, a person just gets fired up and goes out and does it. Ultimately, enthusiasm is not something you can pray… of course, Nitai Gaur, Nityananda to help you become more enthusiastic, but enthusiasm comes from one’s desire.

keep confidence – Krishna helps.*

The type of tests are no longer really needed, either. So, a devotee’s not actually tested so much, and even if he is, it doesn’t make any difference. He just passes to show other devotees as an example. See how easy it was for Krishn… for Prahlada to swim in the boiling oil, because he such a great devotee. Similarly, for us, we get very infinitesimal situations, comparatively, but Krishna helps us to cross over them.

Sink or swim

Just like if you’re driving in a car and the pedal’s… the gas pedal’s not down and the car’s killing, you say… you know, you come to some conclusion, “Well, something’s wrong with the car.” But then sometimes when the engine’s cold, or you’re overloaded, you just have to put on more gas.
You’re going up a hill, you keep going up the hill, then when you’re going up the hill, it kills, say, “What’s wrong?” “Oh I’ll look at the tire…”, and everything, because you weren’t putting the gas on. Right? So, when you’re going up the hill, you’ve got to put the gas on. Maybe sometimes you downshift, put on the gas, and go up. If you don’t put on more gas when you’re going uphill… So, that’s why sometimes Krishna makes a person go uphill a little bit, just like you’re forced to put on the gas.

Complete Satisfaction

When karma-yoga is purified with love and devotion for God then it becomes bhakti-yoga, or devotional loving yoga. Yoga means to unite, or to link up with the supreme. So, when that connection is with the supreme source of all opulences: power, fame, wealth, renunciation, beauty, knowledge, material, spiritual, the source of all happiness, then we actually become completely satisfied. Completely satisfied.

Focus

So what happens like by giving your energy, you are giving your mind to the Lord by concentrating, by meditating, by offering to Him His own name, you directly bring yourself into His association then He gives Himself to you. He gives His love, His reciprocation He reveals His mysteries to you, depending upon how much you’re really concentrating on Him.

Are we the same person ?

According to the scientists, after every 7 years they say all the cells change in the body. So how it that we are still saying this is the same person? Because we are not changing, we are the living spirit soul or spirit being or living energy, which is giving the whole consciousness to this body.

Yoghini Ekadasi

So today is Yogini Ekadasi, a special day when the Lord says this day, whoever observes this Ekadasi, He generally takes birth as His associate, in other words they ride high. So the Lord, He gives many facilities to return to Him. But the conditioned souls, they generally don’t take advantage. That is why we need to outreach people, so that they can understand about the Lord and His devotional service.

It is very difficult to stay focused on the goal of going back to Krishna Although I try reading and also experience suffering but how do I increase my focus?

Krishna consciousness is a gradual process. We start by faith adhua shraddha. We hear from the authorities and then we start associating with devotees, then we start to practice Krishna consciousness, take initiation and then we start to eliminate the anarthas and then we get fixed in bhakti and then we gradually develop a taste or ruchi. We become very attached to Krishna and then we come to the stage of ecstatic love for Krishna and then when we see Krishna we get pure love of Krishna. So as your affection and love for Krishna increases, then you don’t ask such questions. You think how can I live so long without having the association of my wonderful Lord. I am not this body, I am a living force which is a part of Krishna. I am known as the jiva shakti. Sanatan Goswami, when he went to Lord Caitanya, at that time he was the prime minister of the empire of Hussain Shah and he said that people call me a great pandit but actually I am a fool because I don’t know what I am supposed to do, I don’t know who I am. So please enlighten me. So Lord Caitanya said, jivera svarup hoya nitya Krishnera das, that the living entity is eternally the servant of the Supreme Lord. So when we realized that then we won’t think it is hard to go with guru, Gauranga or Krishna. So it is a gradual process and you have to go step by step. When Parikshit maharaj was hearing the 10th canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam he had vowed that he would not eat or sleep before hearing the Srimad Bhagavatam. So I guess at least five days had gone by by that stage. Now what would we ask? I have to have a drink; can I sleep? But what did he say? Tell me some more about my wonderful Lord. Tell me what did my wonderful Lord do? Tell me more, tell me more. He was so eager. So, we have to develop that enthusiasm to hear about the Lord.
