Make your house as a Temple

Those who are staying in the temple they are very fortunate, they have this total environment in which they can practice their Krishna consciousness. We have the temple, so that people coming from outside, we should preserve such a pure atmosphere here that someone will come and will think, oh, this is a temple, this is very holy, this is very pure, let me try to make a replica of this in my house by having temple, by having chanting, by having Krishna consciousness environment as much as possible. Let me take a little vibration from the temple and let it remain in the house.

What the Truth is!

On Giving advice, certainly we don’t think it’s a very pious thing or a very appropriate thing for advancing in spiritual life. We don’t recommend any kind of unlimited sense gratification without dovetailing it in some spiritual way, because it’s going to produce a karmic reaction, which is going to be further entangling. So for that reason, maybe we are not always super popular with certain sectors of public or what can we do, because the truth is the truth. We have to go on presenting what the truth is.

The magnanimous energy

In the Seva svatara Upanishad it states parasa saktir vividhai visuyate – that the Lord has got different energies. Like that Lord Caitanya is Krishna and He has got different energies. Some of these energies write books, like Rupa Sanatana, Ragunatha Bhatta, Ragunatah, Gopal Bhatta and Jiva Gosai – the 6 goswamis. They wrote so many books. There are other energies like Srinivas acarya, they distributed those books. Srinivas Acarya, Narotta das Takur assisted him, Shyamananda Pandit assisted him. They took the books written by the goswamis and they brought those to the eastern part of India. At that time of Bharat in Navadwip; encountered thieves and other problems and they got the books back even after they were stolen and they got books copied and they distributed the books to different pundits; they convinced the pundits that these books are the absolute truth – they give the clearest understanding of the ultimate purpose of the vedas. And after those pundits were convinced of the books, they themselves again continued to expand it. And in this way the movement spread like anything based upon the books.

Serve the supreme lord

Sense gratification is not bad to the limit that we need it. And if we make sense gratification the goal, then it’s bad. The goal should be to serve the supreme person, to become devotees. To become liberated from this material world and engage ourselves purely in His pure devotional service. It’s considered to be the purpose of human life.

What is the real moderation?

That everything should be done with a higher purpose. That is how we moderate.

The Dedicated devotee..,.

Kolavecha Sridhar, he was a fanatic. You can say, or , he was very dedicated to this principle. He took an oath, that he’ll give 50% above, 50% of his income he’ll spend on Ganges Pooja. So, all he was doing was selling bananas, banana leaves, banana flowers, in Bengal that time Navadip, that time of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, so he was hardly making any income. Because, selling Bananas in Navadip is like trying to sell palm oil in Malaysia. Palm oil is everywhere; we don’t need to. Or, trying to sell rubber, latex here. Everywhere it’s growing. So, there in Bengal, everywhere, every house has got bananas. It’s only rare person wants extra bananas. So, somehow or the other he was getting some income. Or whatever income he could get, immediately he’d take 50% and spend it on incense, flower.., whatever he’d get he would spend that on ingredients and go to worship the Ganges and he’d take the rest and he would spend. Of course he was self-employed. He had his own land. He grew his own bananas. He sold them. But actually, he was very poor. His clothes were ripped, his house had holes in it. People used to criticise him. They used to say that “why you are living like this?” In the sense, “proper business sense is that you should stop giving 50% to the Ganges, invest your capital for one year. Build up your capital, become a … , have a good basis for that , then you spend it. Then you .. ah.. after one year is over you give 50%, you have bigger capital, so you have more income, in this way you can give more to Krishna.” He responded that if I start that now, then what… , If I stop giving 50% now, what is the guarantee that after one year, I will start it again. Once I get in to the habit of not giving, then there will always be excuse to bring up little more capital, build up little more wealth, build this, build that in this way then, maya could catch me. Now I am very safe, I am giving 50%, somehow or the other, things are going on, I am not going to change.” “But your clothes are ripped my man! Don’t you see you have holes in your cloth?” He said it’s quite cool in the hot weather. All of my body is covered. What is the matter if there is a little ventilation?” “But you have a hole in your roof!” , “Well, we have to have the light in, come in somewhere, little light, fresh breeze, very healthy.” So these…“Oh! You are very crazy!” And they’d all go off thinking, that Kolavecha Sridhar is totally mad. Wasting his good time and energy worshiping the Ganges.

A source of transcendental joy

In material life which is normally predominated by the raja guna that so many people are sacrificed for the sake of achieving some kind of material goal. When they build these hundred-storey buildings its not at all unusual if two four people fall off and die. That means that just to build the building they are sacrificing life. The nature of raja guna, the mode of passion, tremendous suffering to achieve their goal. But people are willing to accept this suffering for the promise of sense gratification.

Comparatively the suffering in devotional service is, actually… in the beginning when you are in regulated service level it may appear as an inconvenience or as a austerity. But when one actually rises to even the spontaneous regulated service or to the fully spontaneous service it becomes itself a source of transcendental joy. One has to be ready to accept a little inconvenience to practice devotional service. That should be voluntarily accepted

The sudha bhakti is akarma

Pure devotion to the Lord or sudha bhakti is akarma. There’s no result for that on the material platform. If we want material results we can get it without asking we can get all our desires get satisfied. That isn’t any problem at all. If you have billions of dollars, you can get any car you want, any house you want this an automatic thing, but if you have no money then of course, you cannot get these things by the ordinary means. If you have bhakti which is higher than mukti, even the kumaras they were also muktatmas. But when they could see Narayana face to face and when they bowed down at His lotus feet, they were… and smelled the tulasi offered to His lotus feet, they became filled with ecstasies. Their hairs were standing on end. Their body was quivering. They were then able to understand that, “What we were realizing in the Brahman, in the Brahma jyoti darshan that this is nothing compared to the happiness that we are experiencing now just bowing down at the lotus feet of Lord Narayana.”

Develop the attitude of service…

The more that we can develop this service attitude that is actually beneficial to us. The enjoying attitude is kind of a perverted situation which ultimately doesn’t satisfy us. That is why Maya when knows that we are not going to be satisfied, so her last trick is that “All right now you merge, you now become one with God, you become God yourself.” which is a big trick of maya. When you become frustrated from enjoying then we should actually change our attitude and become active in serving the Lord. But because we already have this enjoying attitude this idea to become one with God is just a type of extension of that enjoying attitude. So we should be very fearful about this impersonal concept of God realization.

We want the favor of Krishna.

We want people that are social workers. I was uh… The first time I went to Thailand with Rupanuga Prabhu and Balavanta, they went there. They wanted to start a program for ser… the… distributing prasadam to the Cambodian refugees. So we went there. We found that they were already late. They thought… they had… they were months late. There we literally fifty volunteer organizations there from every country, name shape OXFAM, REFAM whatever, SIDA, UNICEF, PERITEX, CARE, just… a flood of them. They begged, they approached them “Please have prasadam distribution for us. We can’t stand this place. We are completely bored. The food here stinks. Meanwhile if you open up a prasadam restaurant we will be very happy.” They all go there, they go there for 3-4 months, they get bored stiff after the first week, and they are just waiting to go back home. When they go back they’re heroes. They’ve served the Cam… But when they are there, they are miserable. But you can see the devotees, when they are distributing prasadam, doing a ratha-yatra, distributing books or their doing preaching they are blissful. They are ecstatic because they are doing it knowing it… directly its pleasing to Krishna, and they have that… developed that Brahminical culture where they actually have compassion for others. Here they have a sentiment as soon as they get there they see the sick people they do it but it’s… they’re just unhappy.

The whole night they just… they want to have their parties, it’s just like it’s some kind of a.. it’s a very strange combination. They have a touch of goodness in them but, because of their not being trained up in Brahminical culture its, uh… its very unnatural for them to maintain that kind of attitude for more than a couple weeks. They have to mix it with a lot of sense gratification, and there’s no sense gratification on the Cambodian border, and therefore they… they want to go back to Bangkok or something… it’s just… it’s a unusual situation. They want to go back to where they came from pretty fast.

So this is what is actually needed.

The exchange for Devotional service

Devotion in tama is tinged with anger, envy, resentment, vengence uh, illusion, things like that.

Say someone very angry, “Well, I am going to show that person through my devotional service.” That’s devotion tinged with anger. It motivates… that’s your motivation. You wanna show someone else, or a person is just angry all the time at others, he may be devotee, but always criticizi… always angry at others, always in a despondent… always in a negative mood. There’s devotional service, but there is some tama, ignorance mixed there. It’s not pure, therefore that person has got some kind of a separatist mood in terms of the Lord. He cannot get very intimate in his devotional service. Then, there is devotion mixed with raja, with the mood of passion. kāma eṣa krodha eṣa rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ, here in rajo-guna, that means that a person is desiring better material situation. “I have performed devotional service, but I need a better material situation”, or desire for elevation to the heavenly planets. This type of desire of some kind of uh, fame, prestige or some type of better material position and in… in uh, exchange for devotional service, this is like mixture of the rajo-guna and there’s also there a tinge of separate… separatist mood from the Lord, which is called prthak-bhava, to have a separate mood. The mood is not that, “May Krishna be pleased.”

what is the weed and what is the real plant.

what is the weed and what is the real plant. Weed means it looks like a real plant… it’s a plant also, so it looks similar, it’s not necessarily a lot different, it might be a lot different or might even be similar, it’s a plant anyway. So, some of them are a slight different, some of them are really different, just like an oak tree and a piece of grass, same type of living entity: plant, you see, vegetation, but it’s not that completely different, may be in the beginning stages it looks similar, when it’s just like a 3 inches ha… high, but in the end you know it becomes completely different. So how you pull it out in terms of practicality, is by stopping doing that particularly or at least trying to stop. First you isolate what it is, then you work it pulling it out.

What the yogis do…

Maharaja Prithu I believe, he lit the four fires on each side, in the middle of the summer you know, and did… was it he, and he did this severe meditation. I mean this is what the yogis do. They learn to transcend the body in a very physical way, so, it’s a difficult… it’s a difficult process, but if one perfectly does it then will come up to point of God realization, and at which point he can render devotional service to God. The difficulty is that if a person stops, doesn’t continue in the yoga process, then they get stuck up.

Chanting, is not just chanting

one time one mataji in Mayapur was telling Prabhupada, “I don’t want to do any more service, I want to just chant. Just chant. Prabhupad said, Just chant? Chanting is not “just chanting.” Chanting is the topmost of all our activities. Haridas Thakura, he was perfect simply by chanting, you see. But you can just chant, you can simply chant, you can stay here and you sleep two to four hours a day, and you chant the rest of the whole time and you eat once a day. That is why I made temple in Mayapur and Vrndavan. If someone wants to simply chant let them come to the holy dham. Not that you chant in New York city or someplace else. You chant in the holy dham and you don’t eat… only once a day and you reduce your sleep and you chant the whole time. Then Prabhupad laughed and said, “You cannot do it. You will chant for two hours and then will go to sleep. Therefore I have given you so much service.

Slightest devotional service

some thousands of years ago, when the deity was coming back from the wedding, dacoits attacked the whole party. And the dacoit, he completely was absorbed and didn’t see the deity was deity, and thought it was a person ; so immediately came up and said , “All right, stop! I am dacoit, I am robber. I want all your jewels. Give me your jewels! He just started talking to the deity. So the deity completely reciprocated, ye yatha maam prapadhyante …He knew… So then he reciprocated and said : “Well, why… I have just come back from a wedding. You don’t want to attack a wedding party. You don’t want to steal, I am just coming… it is a sacred thing. It’s a wedding. These are wedding, you know. You don’t want to steal from someone coming from a wedding, do you?” And the dacoit thought for a few minutes and said, “No, I don’t have any such restrictions. You are going to fight or you are going to give me your jewels? You just tell me. “No, we won’t fight, you can take the jewels.” So then the thief, he said, all right. I put faith in you. Since the person was so was not going to fight. So then to get a bag and everything, “All right, hold my spear. He handed his spear , and then you know there was… As soon as he had given something to Krishna, it was devotional service. Even you know, just to hold it for a second. Something, from point to A to point B, it went to Krishna. As soon as he gave something to Krishna, immediately by that devotional service he realized that who Krishna was. That this deity was a deity of Krishna was indeed Krishna, and he was speaking to the incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And then suddenly everything , just by that little service, and then he immediately at the point, surrendered because of his realization just by the slightest devotional service, he became a great devotee. So we can understand that even we do a little devotional service.

The Devotee — Desire to serve

For a devotee, the more that you understand that Krishna’s directly accepting your service through the spiritual master, and the main thing that He’s accepting is how enthusiastically you do it, because ultimately, He doesn’t need the service. What He’s relishing is your desire to serve, your devotion, your enthusiasm.

Our Real role – service to krishna

We’re actually eternal spirit souls, and we’re, practically speaking, living out this material drama, that we should learn to play the part of a devotee and then take the great benefit from this bad bargain, to actually become completely Krishna conscious. After all, this is not our real role that we’re playing in this particular body. Our real role is devotional service to Krishna. This is just a setting on the stage, and we are the actors. But, if we play in our eternal role as the servant of Krishna, regardless of what the setting is, as the time causes the setting to change, we never come out of our role as serving Krishna, then actually, we are transferred to the eternal setting, then we don’t have to play the uh, role in these material setting… but for the pure devotee, wherever… whatever setting it may be, the temporary settings of the material world, or the eternal setting of the spiritual sky uh, his consciousness is always one, it’s always fixed: eke ha kuru-nandana, in pure devotional service.
Therefore, for the pure devotee, it doesn’t make any difference whether he’s in the material world, or whether he’s in the spiritual sky. It’s just a question of what stage props are there. For him, his role is always the same: Pure devotional service to Krishna.
