In the service of the Lord

In Dvāpara-yuga you had to leave the house and go to the forest. In Kali-yuga from the home, you can serve the Lord or go to the temple and do devotional service. It is a must that we engage in the service of the Lord. That way we can feel great happiness. We can take some Deity as our special Deity and reveal our mind to Kṛṣṇa and get His blessings. In this way, we can be personally engaged in Lord Kṛṣṇa’s service. And we should help the spiritual master so that the Kṛṣṇa consciousness can spread.

*A Desire to Serve*

Krishna conscious enough so that we will be able to get back to Krishna at the end of the life. Now when the balance gets tilted towards sense gratification it’s then dangerous. Then we can become animals in our next… in our future births, because what keeps us as human beings or what causes us to go back to Krishna is depended on our desire, how much desire do we have to serve Krishna. If our overriding desire is to serve and please then we will go back to Krishna.

The Purpose of Life

Swamvuva manu, that he was able to be Krisha conscious in spite of having an opulent or a very comfortable material situation simply by creating a Krishna conscious environment. So, therefore he didn’t lose sight of what was the purpose of life. For him there was some material comforts and enjoyments but it wasn’t that he was mad after those things so that he became degraded by them because everything was kept in perspective by the constant chanting of Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. By hearing the pastimes of the Lord and by different types of deity worship and devotional service.

Spend everything for Krishna

Srila Prabhupad mentioned that there were some yogis or Gurus in India, they refuse to touch money. They don’t touch money. Actually they collect lacs of rupees every night, check account and they sign cheques, but officially they don’t touch money. Their secretaries handle it. So Srila Prabupad said that I don’t have any problem. I can take money with two hands. I’m not using it for myself. I’m only using it for Krishna. He wanted to do so many things for Krishna. But when devotees, even when they give a million dollars or greater, he would spend it all for Krishna, building nice temples, building nice facilities or serving in Krishna consciousness, to build nice facilities for the Lord, for propagating His message.

The Systematic Service

Prabhupada gave a principle even for senior preachers; we make our proposal to senior vaishnavas, ‘We want to do this preaching for this year, and then we take their approval or their order, even for the sanyasis’. Then for one year we do that service. Just don’t change in the year. How hard it is, you do, and it’s an order. And then, if we want again next year we can propose. sanyasi who is very much senior, independent type preacher, even Prabhupada, we have a system; we should also work in this consciousness that I am working under some senior approval. Not to do independently,

Service is order of my Guru

Krishna is very merciful. We are able to get our faith reconfirmed by actually sticking out even in spite of the difficulty. If we make all kinds of conditions to our service, then our mind will never be fixed. We want this thing; that thing; this has to be. We should just act according to the order. those devotees who are doing something not because this is the order of my Guru or this is my duty, but because of their own whims, their own desire, ‘I need this to be happy. I need that..’. Their minds are always changing. They are never fixed.

Obstacles on the path of devotional service

Lord Chaitanya’s promise to deliver all the fallen souls, so Jagai-Madhai, they were delivered. And they were so fallen. How would people know the greatness of Bheeshma, if it hadn’t been sleeping on the bed of arrows, or lying on the bed of arrows, and in spite of such a painful situation, he is offering all the prayers and glories to Krishna. So similarly, in our own consciousness when some obstacles come up, it is also a test for our self, If we are teaching, we depend on Krishna, then actually this also increases our own faith.

The Devotional Big deal

If everything works out exactly as we wanted, there is no obstacle, and everything is so very well, so we do the devotional service? There are some devotees in the past they said, if it wasn’t for Jagai-Madhai coming and putting that obstacle, how would people know, how merciful Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was. Because Jagai-Madhai was there, he delivered, therefore the actual extend of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s mercy became available.

Be attentive to your devotional service*

Prabhupada repeatedly told the devotees that this process of Krishna Consciousness, we have to be conscious. We have to be quite conscious about what we are doing. If we are doing things mechanically, we do things without thinking and how to please Krishna by those activities, we tend to become careless and make mistakes. If our mind is thinking about sense gratification and not in the meaning of the service we are given, then we also tend to be unconscious about what we are doing. And then mistakes start to happen.

The Wealth of Devotional Service

when we are doing our devotional service, we shouldn’t be discouraged even if some obstacles come up. Rather a devotee considers this as a part of Lord’s plan. Somehow he wants to engage someone in devotional service or a devotee may consider it due to my carelessness. So there is a lesson to learn, not to be careless in the future and to be more careful and be conscious. In this case, all these books were the wealth of devotional service of so many great maha-bhagavat.

The one & only opportunity

By the mercy of the Lord, people are not so miserly today. If we go and approach them, they are also willing to contribute in the Lord’s service. So in his way so many people are engaged in devotional service. It may be the only opportunity for many people to render devotional service to the Lord as they are too conditioned to come and chant Hare Krishna Hare KRishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. When the temple is there then the materialistic people feel more inclined to come and chant.

It’s All Spiritual

We shouldn’t consider carrying out the order of the guru in terms of preaching Krishna consciousness to be material. I was once Srila Prabhupada requesting more time in reading books because I was busy day and night building all the buildings in Mayapur. Maybe I didn’t present it properly, and Prabhupada started to chastise me. “Do you think that building my temples is material? Is building my temple different from reading my books? It is all spiritual.” So for executing our Krishna Consciousness, duly approved by the spiritual master in the disciplic succession, there is no question of material.

Authorised service by higher authority

The thing when it was approved by the higher authority for proper Krishna Conscious reason then the same thing was being accepted and pleased “Yea, I could do it”. So the activity is not as important as the purpose of the activity. The activity is secondary. If one is doing it to please Krishna, it is authorised by the higher authority, that is of primary importance.

The most important service

It is considered one of the most important wings of our whole organization. In fact ‘The most important’ you can say is publishing and distributing books. More important than building temples and anything else. But the actual activity of purchasing paper, going to the printer, making contract, getting the books published, these all so called material activity, but in order to get the book published this is required. Even Srinivas Acharya, he went with Narottama das Thakur and Shyamananda pandit. And their instruction was to go and get the books published, get them printed, and then to distribute them all over Bengal and Orissa.

The authorised devotional service

Sometimes devotees say, I want to go and do some business, if I get any profit I will give it to Krishna. If one is instructed to go out and do business that is another thing. But if one is just doing it because they want to do it, which is very risky. Many people they do services without being properly authorized by senior Vaishnavas. In which case, they are in a very dangerous position. On the other hand, Prabhupada instructed some devotees, ‘Set up BBT. Set up the book business. Print books. Sell books’. So what is the difference? Because it is on the order of Srila Prabhupada, therefore nobody is thinking that BBT book distribution is material.

Books – the treasure of spiritual wisdom*

The solution for the racial prejudice in the world that people should become devoted to the Lord. Then they become free from all this temporary designations. How this happens? This happens automatic by the mercy of the Lord. So Srila Prabhupada once said that his books should go to every person. If they can read his books they can understand easier- what is devotional service, may be they can even become fixed in devotional service. This is special benediction of the Lord, especially in this age Lord Caitanya has made this opportunity very accessible.

Stay strong in devotional service

*

For the Kṛṣṇa conscious lifestyle, whether one is a gṛhastha (a householder), whether one’s a student, or a renounced preacher or a sannyāsi. Whatever the order of life might be, the process is to remain constantly in transcendental knowledge. To come up to the platform of transcendental knowledge by practising devotional service, and then remain there by practising of devotional service. Transcendental knowledge is not like some material commodity; you buy ten kilos of gold and keep it in your back pocket, or something. You buy a few ounces of gold and you keep it in your closet. Transcendental knowledge is non-different from Kṛṣṇa. It’s living, it’s dynamic. And to keep it, we have to remain in devotional service.

The Shelter of Devotional Service

We sometimes become angry, then we lose our intelligence, we fall down into illusion. Then finish of our spiritual life. So it’s very dangerous to leave the shelter of devotional service. It’s most essential to come up to the platform of transcendental knowledge and remain there. Only Kṛṣṇa can be realized by transcendental knowledge…kevalānu bhavānanda svarūpa… “Your form is sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha and whoever perceives You becomes transcendentally blissful.” So, we can see Kṛṣṇa, we can perceive Kṛṣṇa through devotional service, through serving the Deities, through sankirtan, through different types of devotional service.

The everlasting knowledge

A person in transcendental knowledge, they have a transcendental perspective on things. They’re seeing things from the point of view of what’s pleasing to Kṛṣṇa, what’s eternal, what’s everlasting. When we lose that, then we see what’s going to make my body happy, what’s going to make my mind happy. What’s my…We start thinking in all kinds of material terms and we lose sight of our eternal, spiritual condition, and therefore we become fearful. And this fear puts us into great anxiety.

Do The Devotional Service

Sometimes, due to attachment, we fall down from our transcendental position, and we lose the perspective of what we should do and what we shouldn’t do. We become totally under the control of the material modes of nature. This is the danger of being in this material world. Māyā’s so strong, even sages and saints have sometimes become bewildered by the material energy. The only way to remain in transcendental knowledge is through devotional service.
