People when they are in illusion they want to know , so many times we hear people say that “don’t want to chant Hare Krishna” because if we chant Hare Krishna I may have I may have to give up something material , they don’t think that if some one chanting hare Krishna they give up something material like taking meat or intoxication this is because they are happy without those things so why should they do it , the real goal is to be happy but due to illusion they become attached they think that the real goal is to eat meat and to to take intoxication , to take drugs they think this is happiness so they don’t have open mind , no body is forcing to devotees to do anything but by chanting.

Beyond The Material Ability

we have to be fixed in our Krsna consciousness and not be distracted, otherwise it is like the child who has a valuable thing, but gets cheated by someone offering a lozenge, a sweetmeat in exchange for the valuable thing. We have the valuable jewel of Krsna consciousness in our hand , we can achieve love for Krsna , we can achieve the spiritual world, we can help the living entities to come out of their ignorance , come out of their bewilderment that they’re this material body and help them to be able to realise that that they are eternal living entities. All these abilities are there, but maya will try to distract by various tricks. We should avoid that. We should go to Krsna and ask Krsna for the greatest blessing.

The Uncontrolled Desire

Years ago in the 1960’s, a big rock ‘n’ roll star was Janes Japlene. was. She was a person who wanted to really enjoy life to the maximum , but she ended up overdosing in drugs, we always want a little more, more and more and finally overdose. So people are always overdosing in sense gratification. And overdosing produces disease. Because of uncontrolled desire, and they want more and more and more and eventually they get into various kinds of even perverse activities and ultimately they create some kind of imbalance in nature that causes diseases in the society.

The limited instrument*

Someone may have a desire to enjoy , but there is a limit of how much the body can take . So with this limited instrument that we have, it is not possible to actually satisfy all the aspirations of the mind. Somewhere, we have to put a limit.

Don’t try to fill the ocean into a bottle

Actually, without spiritual practice, without Krsna consciousness, life is very dry, very empty. By trying to please the senses and the mind, there is a very limited kind of happiness that one gets. It’s not that one does not feel happy ; certainly there is happiness in the material world. But that happiness is very infinitesimal, very limited. It’s not enough to satisfy us. We have desires as big as the ocean, but the mind and senses are like small bottles. So you cannot fill the ocean of desire into a small bottle.

The Uncontrolled Senses

There are all types of desire . It is not that once you decide to enjoy material things, it’s not that it is just one thing– it is everything ; so many types of thing . It is not that that you just want a car : you need a color TV , a house , you need a little land , you need a swimming pool, you need a– it just goes on and there is never end , if the senses are uncontrolled. If the senses are controlled , well, then one can be satisfied even with the very simple bed . But how does one control the senses ? The senses are only able to be controlled if one is in pure devotional service because then, one is basically peaceful ;they can be satisfied with a small amount of material possessions.

The temporary Demands

We go all the way to Krsna ,we go to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, what is the use for asking some temporary thing? The idea is that you shouldn’t go to the supreme person and ask something and again and again– you have to keep going back . You should take what you need one time and that should be enough forever.

Fight Against Maya

we have to eradicate maya. Maya in any form – those in the renounced order once they get rid of the gross attachments, then the subtle things start to attack. And we have to refine our devotional service till we get to the purest state. So we are practicing the same, it just gets more difficult to differentiate the more subtle that maya becomes. Sometimes you cannot tell what is maya and what is not because renunciation is very similar to devotional service. But even to renounce something which is favorable to devotion is also material.

Think beyond the body!!

Ethiopia or something, people they become very distressed to see the bodily distress. To see thirst or hunger. They identify so strongly with thirst or hunger that if they see that they become very affected. Of course even a Vaishnava doesn’t want to see any one suffer. Vaishnava has a broader vision, beyond the body. The bodily suffering is due ultimately to our identification with the body. One should not just think how to relieve the immediate distress but how to permanently end it by giving spiritual knowledge.

The wicked world

The vedas say that this energy is eternal. So there are four eternal aspects and there is one temporary aspect. There there is the living entity or the internal Shakti of which the living entity is a part, So this Lord’s internal energy, then there is time… external energy, time and then karma. So the four are eternal but because the time is over, the time is also eternal, but because the time is over the karmas or material temporary activities those activities are temporary, for instance you construct this wooden case here. This case is not eternal. After some time …termites, different things are going to eat it and it’s going to change. This was made by some material activity.
whatever you do, material thing has a beginning, has an end. Nothing is permanent because time factor has it’s toll on all material things but Krishna, the material and spiritual energy, even time itself, these are internal factors but the spiritual energy is above time, the material energy is controlled, it’s effected, the material activities are effected by the time element. So although the material energy is eternal, it’s shape, it’s function, is controlled by time, but the spiritual energy is above time. Therefore in the spiritual world there is no death, there is no old age, there is no… none of the problems that come from the passing of time, those problems only exists here in the material world.

Religion – The passionate pride

Prabhupada repeatedly advices how they are not able to solve the real problems of life – birth, death, old-age and disease. This is very obvious, yet they are so proud. They are so proud of their so called advancement. Their pride manifests in so many ways. Just like a person is proud of his sectarian religion. They are pride in their sectarian religion is more than any real love for God. So, as a result, people are killing each other, whatever their religion is, they are very proud of their religion. But they don’t even know what their religion teachings are, in most cases. Nor, are they interested to know. They are simply absorbed in pride. Since, I am the greatest person, and I belong to this religion, this must be the greatest religion. It’s actually what it comes down to. Somebody else is enemy of my religion, he is my enemy and therefore, he should be killed. This way people are manipulators. So, we have Muslims against Christians in Lebanon. We have Hindus against Budhists in Sri Lanka, Hindus against Muslims in India, Sikhs against Hindus in India, then Protestants against Catholics in Ireland and so on and so forth. So, this false pride, whereby people don’t actually understand what is the real principles of religion, what is the actual situation of another person. They are so self-centred that they simply are concerned with their own pride. When you read the newspapers, the leader of Libya and the leader of America, how they are calling each other different things. One thing that’s common is, definitely there is a tremendous amount of pride. Who is right and who is wrong is another thing, …to what degree…. No matter what they do, they think, what they are doing is right. Even if they are dead wrong, they think they are right. Unless there is some humility, unless there is some other consideration, then how can you create any kind of a unification or any kind of a peace? So, where to get these good qualities? How to curtail such a thing, as pride? Just talking about it, don’t be proud won’t go very far. What needs to be established is that the person if they are established in religious principles, automatically false pride reduces. If they are established in austerity, cleanliness, truthfulness and mercy; then they will be detached from false pride, over attachment to women and to intoxication. Therefore, the Krishna conscious movement is promoting this religious principle. And preachers of the Krishna conscious movement, they have to be themselves very careful to adopt and emulate these Brahmanical principles, to show them as examples for the rest of the society. If a preacher doesn’t show good qualities, rather shows bad qualities, then people will not take seriously what the preacher is saying.

The dead civilization vs the lord’s benevolent blessings

Prabhupada says: All energies and powers are derived from the supreme source, Lord Kṛṣṇa, and they act as long as He desires and cease to function as soon as He withdraws. All electrical energies are received from the powerhouse, and as soon as the powerhouse stops supplying energy, the bulbs are of no use. In a moment’s time such energies can be generated or withdrawn by the supreme will of the Lord. Material civilization without the blessing of the Lord is child’s play only. As long as the parents allow the child to play, it is all right. As soon as the parents withdraw, the child has to stop. Human civilization and all activities thereof must be dovetailed with the supreme blessing of the Lord, and without this blessing all advancement of human civilization is like decoration on a dead body. It is said here that a dead civilization and its activities are something like clarified butter on ashes, the accumulation of money by a magic wand and the sowing of seeds in a barren land.

Lessons to learn from Maharaja Bharata

It’s like the proverbial race between the hare and the tortoise. Until we cross over the finish line, until we actually reach Krishna prema, until we go are back right to the lotus feet of Krishna, at any point, even just a few feet from the finish line somebody was racing and they tripped just before the finish line, so they came in last. The danger is there, you can’t stop until you go over the last hurdle. It doesn’t matter whether you have been, Bharata Maharaja, after giving up everything, or whether you are just in the beginning we have to always be very consistently… apratihata, unbrokenly rendering our devotional service until finally we take the full shelter of Radha and Krishna. Then our flowers and our fruits of devotional service they blossom, and they fructify and then we are actually beyond the danger of falling down because our natural whole reference point will be changed to one of consistently spontaneously always in Krishna’s service.

Therefore Krishna could say nāpnuvanti mahātmānaḥ saṁsiddhiṁ paramāṁ gatāḥ, that once you achieve the spiritual world then again you don’t come down into this material world as a conditioned soul. So these are some very important lessons to learn from Maharaja Bharata pastimes.

Be very careful not to become lackadaisi

The principle is we shouldn’t do anything that’s not directly a devotional service. You know immediately Bharata Maharaj should have let the deer go its own way He gave up the whole world, the kingdom was going on, now the deer would also have gone on, it required his day to day attendance, it didn’t require. But he didn’t consult with the guru “What should I do in this regard?” So even inadvertently delayed his return back to Godhead by three births. So similarly we should be very careful not to become lackadaisi… or not to become careless thinking that well I have already practices for a long time.

It’s like the proverbial race between the hare and the tortoise.

The temporary drama

Who should stay and who should go, that ultimately is beyond our control. That’s within His control. If He wants to He can interfere. These things of course, He even orchestrates. Sometimes, He allows His devotees to get put in some difficulty. That makes the devotee more fixed up because these are all temporary relationship. The real eternal relationship is with Krishna. So by some temporary drama, Krishna brings the devotee even closer to Him. They are all drama that we appear in this world and we are now as an Indian or as American or as a… some North Indian, South Indian whatever, man or woman this is also we are given for this life our… a stage dress, you see. But actually this has nothing to do with our eternal identity.

The Reality of krishna conscious

we find this general misunderstanding people think that Krishna consciousness means to renounce everything and give everything away and in India it’s not uncommon to find people with millions of rupees and so many possessions.

They think “Well before I become a devotee I should give it all away to my relatives. And then I will come empty handed as I am to Krishna.” Prabhupada used to say that “Why give it all away to your relatives? You should give to Krishna at least 50%. In fact even keep 25% for emergency, for yourself. Family members don’t need more than 25%.” So that was the example given by Rupa and Sanatana. Because we use all of these energies in Krishna’s service. So therefore we are not going to put into difficulty.

Normally people wanting material things to enjoy they think that they are giving that up that’s the opposite of enjoyment, therefore they are transcendental but that’s actually the impersonal idea. We take material things instead of trying to enjoy them we offer them to the service of Krishna for his enjoyment. In this way we should think of so many ideas how to expand the devotional service of the Lord for His enjoyment and that will be the most purifying for us. And of course Krishna is especially satisfied when His devotee is served.

Krishna and Balarama from everybody’s angle of vision…

Baladeva was originally in the womb of Devaki. He prepared everything for Krishna coming, and then He transferred over to Rohini, and they thought that Devaki had a miscarriage then. So, actually, He was first in the womb of Devaki, so in that sense also, the same mother, and Vasudeva in either case, is the same father. So actually, here, Prabhupada mentions that:

Baladeva was actually the son of Devakī, but He was transferred from Devakī’s womb to that of Rohiṇī. This fact was not disclosed.

A lot of little… in one sentence there, so many secret information has been revealed. Now Nanda Maharaja was also of course as brother… half-brother with Vasudeva. So, Nanda-Maharaja, in that sense, Krishna was also a brother, but a cousin-brother, from Nanada Maharaja’s point of view, with Balarama.

Krishna and Balarama from everybody’s angle of vision, either they had real transcendental vision or… Vasudeva’s vision, or from Nanda Maharaja’s vision, they’re all… Krishna and Balarama are both brothers, and that same relationship was maintained between Lord Nityananda and Lord Caitanya, that They accepted Each other as practically like brothers. Lord Nitayanda appeared before Lord Caitanya; He was older. These are all allowed for transcendental pastimes to be exchanged.
