The Teachings of Bhāgavat

The danger or the difficulty is over, then people tend to forget the Lord. And they concentrate on their materialistic activities. But here we see in Gajendra that in the different prayers, that he’s saying that, “If I get out of this danger, then I don’t want to remain in ignorance anymore. I don’t want to remain just in materialistic consciousness anymore. Please bless me that I can actually be not only liberated from this danger, but that I can be liberated from the material ignorance, and that I be situated in Your eternal relationship. This is the special teaching of the Bhāgavat.

*The Greatest Devotee*

The greatest devotee is one who even though they have all kinds of material facility and opulence that they are not falsely proud of that. They never waver in their devotional service, even though they have material facility. Normally , we get a little material facility and we off track.

What is really needed?

The senses are always wanting something, something we don’t have. It’s like a little child, three four years old, wants something: “Give me the moon father, I want the moon! I want the moon! Then how the father can give the moon to the child? He wants something that’s impossible. Later, as they grow up, they know the moon he can’t give me; maybe you can give me this. They start to be a little more realistic in terms of the material sphere. Just like we want things the senses are always demanding, but then we know , that’s not possible , that’s not possible; so by spiritual development, we can see what is really needed.

Connection with Krishna*

The desire to serve Kṛṣṇa , to be with Kṛṣṇa, is not a foreign or extraneous kind of desire. It is a natural desire. Therefore one is very peaceful even in desiring. But any other type of desire always leaves one unfulfilled. And even when one achieves the object of desire, it is not complete. Our complete situation is to be in connection with Krsna.

Devotee – The perfect living being

prabhupada explained one time that basically if he is born a worm in the stomach of a devotee, basically this is what he is requesting that at least that time that way you can get little mahaprasad. The devotee should be taking prasad whereas by him even brahma he won’t even get mahaprasad. So actually the devotee of the lord is only perfect living being. All the good qualities of Krishna are also present in a devotee.

The Devotional Doctor

Just like if we have a physical disease we go to the doctor and say I have a belly ache, what should I do? He gives us some pills and it gets cured.
We go to a doctor that I have a disease, I have a problem, I can’t get along with people, I am not happy when I do my devotional service or I don’t have an attachment for Krishna consciousness or these problems disturb my mind or whatever it may be, you go to the guru or representative of the guru, and we try to get these things purified by their advice.

Making the most of opportunities.

The great acarya, they are planning different program in other planets as well but devotee very concerned simply be a devotee , becoz if you take birth in the heavenly planets …remains as some kind of minor demigod or something and you enjoy then after that by the time your life is over then movement of *lord chaitanya will transfer to another universe* and the heavenly planets kaliyuga go fast here they go slow so the point is not to miss this opportunity now is the opportunity, where you can get like clearance house everything must go just come fresh now in very little effort you can go back to home back to godhead you can get pure love for Krishna by following lord chaitanya mahaprabhu’s movement.

Enlighting the people with spiritual message

Each one of us has got an individual responsibility. No matter what happens in the future, say that in the future there is a world wars and there is no more communication in the world, you know, Krishna forbid that negative things happen to the devotees, but you cannot say that it may not happen. We may be all unable to communicate with each other, we may not be able to phone up our spiritual master or he may not be able to fly in and see the disciples, still each one of us is individually responsible to the best of our abilities to spread this consciousness, and to enlighten people with this spiritual message.

Dear most Krishna devotees

The devotee of Krishna is more dear, more dear to Kali, more dear to Shiva than her own devotees. In India this is actually an important point. People, they spend so much time worshipping Shakti. Worshipping Shiva. They don’t realise that the dearest to the lord, the dearest to even Kali or Durga is Krishna’s devotee. Dear to Shiva than anyone is the devotee of Krishna. That’s why Lord Shiva came out of his own lake in Kailash when the Pracetas where there and said, “Because you are devotees of Krishna, you are very dear to me. Therefore I’m going to … The devotees of Krishna are most dear to me. Therefore I’m going to give you spiritual knowledge. Then he taught them his stotram or prayer, glorification of Krishna.

The blossoming community

we should be very clear about what Prabhupad wants, what the previous Acaryas want. When we are clear, when we are sure then we should go ahead without any doubt, should go ahead with full enthusiasm knowing that their mercy is there behind us. So already we can see that Krishna’s mercy is coming down, the evidence is there to that effect and that things are starting to gradually expand, nice devotees are coming and community is blossoming. So we should be careful to keep all relationships in Vaishnav Krishna conscious level, avoid the things that happens when big communities sometimes goes to a loss in kind of a family spirit. We can keep us unified just like Krishna had a family with millions of people and they are all one big family. Similarly we can remain as one family even if we our numbers grow if we keep that Krishna conscious spirit and if we avoid any kind of material consciousness that comes up to interfere with that natural Krishna conscious flow and the appreciation of good qualities in other and avoid bad qualities.

The PRIN©IPL€$ ()F $pi®itu@l LIF£

nāma-saṅkīrtanāc ca: one should chant the holy names of the Lord — Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare — either individually or with others. Lord Caitanya has given special stress to chanting of these holy names of the Lord as the basic principle of spiritual advancement. Another word here…used here is ārjavena, meaning “without diplomacy.” A devotee should not make plans out of self-interest. Of course, preachers sometimes have to make some plan to execute the mission of the Lord under proper guidance, but regarding personal self-interest, a devotee should always be without diplomacy, and he should avoid the company of persons who are not advancing in spiritual life. Another word is ārya. Āryans are persons who are advancing in knowledge of Kṛṣṇa consciousness as well as in material prosperity. The difference between the Āryan and non-Āryan, the sura and asura, is in their standards of spiritual advancement. Association with persons who are not spiritually advanced is forbidden.

Addicted to association

we can understand that our life is very short. We want to, in this lifetime, become so thoroughly in love with Krishna, we want to be so thoroughly addicted to associating with Krishna’s devotees, to eating Krishna prasadam, to dancing in Krishna’s kirtan, to reading and hearing the classes about Krishna and to telling other people about Krishna, to serving and building projects for Krishna, and doing service for Krishna. We want to become so thoroughly absorbed in that transcendental association, that we thoroughly can identify with Krishna and be accepted by Krishna in His eternal circle of devotees. Especially, we want to be accepted by Srila Prabhupada as his eternal family member that we can continue to associate with him wherever he is, eternally, knowing that whenever we are with him, we can immediately feel his transcendental presence, the presence of Krishna and Vrindavana, Mayapura-dhama.

Think of Krishna’s sambhandi..

If you want to love Krishna, you love the loved ones of Krishna. If you love Krishna’s cows and His calves, His cowherd boys, if you love His holy dhama, His devotees then it is very easy to love Krishna. Because they are with Krishna. If you are with them then you are with Krishna. When we leave this world, if we think of a devotee of Krishna, if we think of the holy dhama of Krishna, of the pastimes of Krishna, or the form of Krishna, or the name of Krishna, then we return back to Krishna, because they are not different on the absolute platform. How can we think directly of Krishna until we are already on the liberated platform, you see? Then we have seen Krishna, rather, we are thinking of Krishna’s sambandhi, those things which are related to Krishna. Some may say, “I like to see you Krishna, but I don’t want to see those smelly cows. I want you without the cows.” Well, then you can’t go to Goloka Vrndavana. Plus, the cows are not smelly anyway. They are scented, they are beautiful. But when someone has some prejudice like that then you see, he won’t be able to go back to Krishna. On the other hand, if someone is very appreciative of all the loved ones to Krishna, then immediately he becomes very intimate with Krishna.

love, those whom Krishna loves…

When you see that devotees who are preaching in very difficult situation like, eastern Europe or Muslim countries, or sometime have to go all alone for a long time. You see, when they are very happy to come back and associate with the devotees. Sometimes, those who get the association of devotees, they take it for granted. They don’t realize that how valuable it is to associate with devotees if they are discussing about Krishna. Discussing how to expand our service, if they are actually, sincerely trying to serve the spiritual master, having association with them is so purifying, it’s so enlivening. If we want to go back to spiritual world, is very simple, if one loves, those whom Krishna loves. If you want to love Krishna, you should love the loved ones of Krishna. Just as Krishna has shown in Aghasura leela. How much He loves His devotees. He actually felt… He didn’t want to be… even Krishna doesn’t want to be separated from His cowherd devotees. Even Krishna didn’t want to be alone without His devotees. So, how wonderful are the devotees of the Lord! If even Krishna… of course they are the eternal associates of Lord Krishna. Nonetheless, we can see that how much Krishna loves the devotees. So, it’s recommended that if you want to see Krishna, first you have to see His devotees.

Fanning the fire -Association of Devotees

Sometime we may have a certain layer, instead, just like a coal, if you don’t continually fan it, ashes form. So, even though, beneath that there is fire, sometimes…, a devotee is already on fire, but then they become little lax, or they become somehow implicated in some kind of subtle weeds or offenses, and then, somehow their devotional service slackens. And then, little ash forms over the Charcoal, so to speak. So Prabhupada said, we have to be continually fanning the fire. Even the association of devotees is such that one way or another it gets fanned. By association we are encouraged to, you see, come up to the proper standard. That’s…. one thing is that, when Narottam Thakur says that we should associate with devotees vaisnava seva chadiache … chadiache vaishnava seva, nistar payiache keba. That who has ever achieved deliverance who has given up the association and service of the devotees of the Lord?

In one purport in the Caitanya Charitamrta, Srila Prabhupada explains, the purport when Lord Caitanya met Rupa and Sanatana and embraced them and told them that they no longer should be known as Dabir Khasa and Sakir Mallika. But that they should be known as Rupa and Sanatana. In there He gave the blessing to them and He told the other devotees, you give your blessings to Rupa and Sanatana, so that they can be pure devotees, or they are pure devotees you give their blessings to them. Immediately, Rupa and Sanatana, they were humbled, they went and touched the feet of the other devotees. And the other devotees were congratulating them for getting the mercy of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. So in the purport, Srila Prabhupada explains, this is the attitude of a Vaisnava. If he sees that another Vaisnava is getting the mercy of the Lord, He is not envious, He is not jealous. He is rather, congratulated. He’s rather happy, he’s overjoyed. “All glories to you! You have got the mercy of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.” They said that the non-Vaisnavas, or even in the garb of Vaisnavas, who is envious, when someone gets the mercy of Lord Caitanya, who is critical, unnecessarily, then such a person is not actually a Vaisnava. Because, a Vaisnava, means non-envious, non-jealous. So, when, Prabhupada said that when it says to associate with Vaishnavas, that means, those who are not envious or jealous. Those who are not bitter against their Godbrothers. But those who are having the quality of a Vaisnava, and if someone gives up the association of those who are envious, rather that is required. Because for a Madhyam adhikari devotee it says there are four recommended activities. We should surrender unto the Supreme personality of Godhead, we should befriend the devotees of Lord, we should be merciful and compassionate on the innocent and we should neglect the envious. So, Srila Prabhupada said, there are many envious and jealous persons in the garb of Vaishnavas, in this Krishna Conscious movement. And they should be completely neglected. Now when he says Krishna conscious movement he wasn’t only meaning the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. But, in the broad sense. Anyone who is proclaimed follower of Lord Caitanya. In the broad sense is a member of the Krishna Conscious movement. But, if they can appreciate that if Krishna Consciousness societies, spreading, Prabhupada, spreading this movement all over the world then we should neglect such people. It’s not that by neglecting them, that we are committing any offense. Rather, if they are envious of jealous, or if they have nothing good to say, and we neglect them. This is required.

The Satva satsanga

During the day, people are gathering together in the coffee shops, in India we call it as tea stalls, or in the taverns, people gather together and they start to talk, but here, so the devotees, they gather together, bhagavata nitya sevaya, and they discuss the Bhagavata. They discuss the glories of Krishna. They discuss the Bhagavad-gita. This is very pleasing to Krishna. And this is very purifying. This allows, ones’ consciousness to be little more open and is little more effective in softening the heart.

Why we practice sadhana?

In Mayapur, Prabhupada, he was very emphatic, that everyone should take prasadam together with the devotees. Sometimes, devotees like to take their prasadam alone or separate, or in little units. But Srila Prabhupada, was saying that no, this is a purification. Just as Krishna would sit with His cowherd boys in a line – ‘sari sari’, and take prasadam. To take prasadam with the devotees, that is very pleasing to Krishna and that is purifying. It was astonishing to us. It seemed like a very insignificant thing. But Prabhupada was saying “No! It’s preferable if everyone takes prasadam together.” Or different devotees take prasadam in groups. Sometimes, he had special system called daoya system, where groups of devotees were taking, about twelve at a time, and hot chapattis and hot dal was taken right off the fire. Anyway, that’s another…

Then, of course Srila Prabhupada, he always impressed us the importance of coming together to hear the Srimad-Bhagvatam from the devotees. Because something is heard, it’s discussed, even some of the people present, if they are more advanced, they may bring some point at the end of class, or ask a question which is illuminating to the others. Plus, the energy, when something is discussed with many devotees, Krishna says that there are many places where He is not, but one place He is, is where His devotees have assembled together to discuss His glories.

Even curse is a blessing…

worshipper or yajaka of a demigod of a devata performs a tapasya whether as to Kartikeya or to Shiva or to Durga according to how they are performing their tapasya then they will give a reciprocal benediction. But the devotees of Krishna, they are considered to be like desire trees. Their mercy is beyond this type of calculation. That’s why we pray Vaisnavanam ya… we pray

vāñchā-kalpatarubhyaś ca

kṛpā-sindhubhya eva ca

patitānāṁ pāvanebhyo

vaiṣṇavebhyo namo namaḥ

That they’re patita pavana, they’re unlimitedly merciful because even for a little small service, you see, they give a very big benediction. Or in this case, even without any qualification, rather negative qualification Manigriva and Nalakuvera had negative qualification. They were rather offensive. But as a result of their offenses, the mercy of… who can imagine Narada Muni’s mercy that he gave them a blessing in the form of a curse that they could see Krishna face to face. And they could reside in Vrindavan for so long. Even though they were trees, they were also blessed that they could have the same human intelligence. So they lot of time to meditate on their mistakes, and then in the end, they could see Krishna. So that that blessing of the devo… even his curse is a blessing. What to speak of his blessing? That is unimaginable.

The spiritual master who is very dear to krishna

The mercy of the devotee, one can make very rapid advancement. Even, even if these persons who did not have, proper qualification they also could see Krishna face to face. So what to speak the devotees’ blessing is so powerful that we are always hankering for getting that special mercy. Because the spiritual master, the pure devotees, they are very dear to Krishna. So if they ask Krishna something, then Krishna, He honors that request. Not that Krishna is obliged. He is independent. He can do as He likes. But out of His very friendly and wonderful nature which is unparalleled, He gives that special facility to His devotee. He gives that mercy if the devotee wants something, then Krishna, He often, He fulfils that although He is not obliged to. That’s His wonderful nature. So these two sons of the demigods, they could understand seeing Krishna that this is not just a small boy in Vrindavan. This is the param-brahman. This is the same Supersoul. But He has disguised Himself and this way He is playing for His own purpose. So they all said meditated that “Nobody can understand Who You are, Krishna. But somehow or other, we could understand that in fact You are the Supreme Lord. But uh, You cover Yourself in this way by Your lilas, and we only want to pray that we can now not forget You and we can eternally, engage in Your devotional service.”

Krishna blessed Manigriva and Nalakuvera that “Now you don’t have to fear. You can go back to your father Kuvera and you shall not forget Me in the future.” May be that by their getting mercy of Lord Shiva also somehow they misused that blessing, you see. This is the difference. Sometimes we approach a demigod for some material facility and they give or I will take it, but then we may misuse that facility. Another type of blessing by the brother of Shiva in one sense is that Narada who was manasa putra of Bramha in this creation, although actually he is eternally liberated, so in that sense, he is beyond all these categories. Well he blessed the Kuvera’s sons.

His curse was a blessing that they could get the eternal bhakti, eternal service to Krishna. So that was considered to be a far greater blessing. Shiva ji, he also Lord Shiva give this blessing sometime if somebody ask Shiva that, “Please give me blessing of pure devotional service,” he is very pleased. But normally people are not approaching him for that. They are approaching for some material benedictions, so he very disinterestedly “All right, take it” but the demigods they are also controlled by Krishna in their heart by the Paramatma Vishnu. So what happens is that demigods they are giving the blessing in proportion to the sacrifice and worship of the devotees.

The Mercy of a pure devotees

Nalakuvara and Manigriva, they had been doing bad… they were doing unauthorized activity, what to speak of pious activity? They were doing activity which was completely against the regulative principles for a demigod or for a human being. But in spite of that, Narada Muni, he blessed and they could see Krishna. So because he said that Krishna accepted. What to speak if the devotee is sincerely trying to serve the Lord through the spiritual master and if the spiritual master prays to Krishna, “Please have Your mercy on this fallen soul.” you see, then Krishna very easily delivers that devotee. Therefore we depend more on the mercy of the devotee for spiritual advancement. Then even in our own sadhana or our own practices.
