The Mercy of Guru and Krishna

Māyā will give us always reasons why to become bitter, why to become materialistic… Right? If we’re doing sankirtan/ book distribution, if we have a good day, Māyā can give us an impetus to say, “You’re such a great devotee. You’re so wonderful. You’re so expert. This that. You’re better than everybody.” And get puffed up. The next day we don’t do so good and, “Just see this devotional service is no good. You should go back home and quit, and things are better.” Or if we do good, we can hear the words of the Bhāgavatam, and the Guru and the Vaiṣnavas, that, “This is simply the mercy of Guru and Kṛṣṇa.

The Acharya’s spiritual platform*

There is one type of level of devotional service where the devotee is so completely surrendered to Krsna that he doesn’t even know what his body is doing. His body is taken over by Kṛṣṇa; h is completely absorbed in his relationship with Kṛṣṇa. There are some acaryas like that. Although they are physically visible in this world, their consciousness is totally in the spiritual world. And the material body is just being directed by Krsna, it is just like you walk without thinking , they are walking and doing things is being handled by Krsna. But everything they are doing is completely on the spiritual platform. So they are not at all preoccupied with their body. That state we cannot imitate, but there is such a state.

“Guru – The best of Giver”

Whether one is a kaniṣṭha, madhyama, uttama; The idea is one always the servant of the servant of the servant. That does not change. In the Krishna Conscious movement, the devotees are on different levels. There is point where the devotee stops being a servant. Even if one is a guru, his qualification is he is a disciple.

How to become an Acharya?

The idea Prabhupada said, to be a Guru is not a big thing, he said it is being like a postman ; you have to deliver the message without changing it. You have to be able to understand the teachings of the previous acharyas and deliver them without adding your own opinions and changing it. You have to follow.. you have to be able to train people to follow those teachings and you have to practice them yourself . So you have to be able to teach, you have to follow and you have to be able to train. Person who can do this, then he is an acharya.

Surrender to the spiritual master

There are some people who are so called seekers of the Truth. They want to find the Truth, they want to find God and then, but they are proud. They dont want to surrender to the spiritual master , and then “what is the need of the spiritual master, what is the need of… Oh I can directly achieve God”. And because they are also pretentious people. They are pretentious people and because of their offence that Krishna and certain devotees in the material world, so many devotees who are trying to serve him, who are helping in spreading the mission of spreading the glories of the holy name. Because these people neglect such devotees who are very dear to the Lord , and they want to pass over them and want to go directly to the Lord with their offence, the Lord does not recognize these pretentious people.

The actual praman

The process of devotional service means to completely be always dependent upon Krishna . “I think ” or ” I feel ” or different opinions. The opinions have no value in the absolute sense. It may relatively add some value but in the absolute sense, we simply want to repeat whatever the previous acharyas have said, whatever the shastras say. Everything we say should be substantiated; should be backed up and powered. Otherwise it has no value. Opinions of an individual soul of a conditioned soul have no absolute value. Only the words of the shastras, of the vedas and the previous acharyas and examples of great sages like, great mahajan’s like Prahalad maharaj.

Abide the footsteps of Acharyas

In the system of Lord Chaitanya they respected the commentation of the previous acharyas and those things which he did not discuss upon, they discussed. Just like in the Chaitanya Charitamrita; Krishnadas kaviraj, he did not bother to again repeat the same things that Vrindavan Das Thakur has mentioned in the Chaitanya bhagavata because it would be disrespectful to duplicate the same work twice if it is right, if it is proper. So he just gave a synopsis, just to give the chronological order and understanding that referred to the other works that gave details on Lord Chaitanya’s useful past times. So this is our system in general in our disciplic succession, and of course in ISKCON where Prabhupada has established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, as a separate branch of Lord Chaitanya’s tree.

Purview of our previous Acharyas

we are not about to stop preaching the message of CaitanyaMahaprabhu, our dedicated to preaching His message, we are going to continue preaching His message, at all cost. And apart from our collective responsibility, as the International Society for Krishna consciousness, every devotee should realize that individually they have each the mandate, the responsibility, handed down through the disciplic succession to them, to spread this Krishna consciousness all over the world, to every person, because we may not be individually capable and because it was the desire of our previous acharyas that we should cooperate and do it collectively, and because Prabhupada has given us this International society for Krishna consciousness, as some…as a platform, or as a mechanism for… for doing that, therefore, for all this reasons to satisfy the previous acharyas, we are working together in this way.

Sources through Sages

If someone says, “well can you prove it? Can you show Krishna’s expanding His 1000 or 16000 forms?” This is not something that Krishna, that alright now put on a show. It’s not a Ringley Brothers circus, that we can just any time show, but this is something which was witnessed by great sages, by great devotees, by great spiritual masters of that time. It was recorded by authorized people who are known for their impeccable honesty, and it’s been handed down through a unbroken chain of disciplic succession of spiritual masters. There is no other source of this information. If someone says, “Well I want to have some other source.”, there is no other source that we have that’s ever been found apart from being present on the planet at that particular time.

The foremost GBC

In the time of Lord Caitanya although they didn’t officially have, in our GBC like that but although they had many spiritual masters and they had many, different devotees but practically which is like spontaneous GBC, and just all the Goswamis and the senior devotees, they would discuss, and whatever they decided all the other devotees would accept, and everyone was working together. It was one movement. It wasn’t like a dozen movements, so it was one movement but they have their own preaching place and they have their own assignments and they would come together and have big festivals on Gaura Purnima and disappearance day and appearance days of great associates of Lord Caitanya, of Nityananda’s appearance, like that and it was just a spontaneous.

We’re seeing here in ISKCON, Prabhupada has kept the same mood. Now making the whole ISKCON world movement with so many spiritual masters and preachers, and GBC’s and Sannyasis and Temple Presidents and regional secretary so on. Sankirtana devotees and how they all preach in the diffent areas, then we get together to the Mayapur festival, sometimes we get together just like this, getting together you are getting association.

Krishna katha through the lips of Vaishnava

The actual purpose of yoga is to reach the absolute truth, this they have kept a secret, so therefore it’s also an advice for us, that

avaiṣṇava-mukhodgīrṇaṁ

pūtaṁ hari-kathāmṛtam

śravaṇaṁ na kartavyaṁ

sarpocchiṣṭa-payo yathā

Not to hear, the lessons on the transcendental qualities of Hari, the explanations of Bhagavatam through the lips of non-vaisnavas. By doing so this is like drinking milk touched by the lips of a serpent, on will become poisoned and fall down. So, we are so fortunate that Lord Caitanya, He taught the Six Gosvamis, then in turn they taught other disciples, in this way the disciplic succession has handed down this message, down to Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Gaura Kisora Dasa Babaji, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, Srila Abhaya Charana Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and Srila Hridayananda Goswami Acaryadeva.

Like this the disciplic succession coming down, so that we can get the transcendental and pure message. So this paramapara system is so important because each spiritual master is taking on the mood of the previous spiritual master, and the line from the previous spiritual masters, in this way it is transmitted down generation after generation. According to time, place and circumstance preaching is going on but the original mood, the original vision is always intact, bringing people up to the highest standard of pure Krishna Consciousness.

Krishna sends the spiritual master

Narada muni took compassion Dhruva Maharaja he is giving his advice. This is actually what one needs from the sadhu. One shouldn’t be lazy and think that “The sadhu is everything for me.” but “The sadhu will give me advice. Whereby I can reach Krishna.” This is the natural reciprocation.

Narada Muni’s advice was offered freely to Dhruva Maharaja. Not like the professional yogis who come to the west, “You want any mantra, any advice, then you have to pay first. Major credit cards are accepted. Pay first, talk later.” Actually there was one magician in New Orleans temple, he became a devotee, and he showed, he dressed up like a sadhu, and then he showed from his hands, he was making ashes come. Piles of ashes. He was creating things out of the air, like so many yogis. Only difference is that he did not claim that he was God. He only claimed he was a magician.

So this is the thing. Narada Muni, when he was standing there and Dhruva came. He was asking the lions, he was asking trees, he was asking everyone and everything, “Are you God? Are you Bhagavan?” Because he had no idea who and what was Bhagavan. He only knew his mother said,”The sages go in the forest and look for Bhagavan. Therefore you go the forest, you find Bhagavan.” So he was looking in the forest everywhere “Where’s bhagavan?”, you see. “You Bhagavan? You?” He didn’t know anymore, whether the Bhagavan was two feet or five feet, or whether he was blue, green or what. He only knew the God was there somewhere. Exactly who God was or what he was, what he looked like, had no ideas. He was just looking for Bhagavan.

So he was a Ksatriya. Ksatriyas so determined that nothing can stop them, they proceed. So, this is a great opportunity that Dhruva’s getting because Krishna has sent his pure devotee Narada as the Guru. When a soul is sincerely looking for the truth, even though he may not have any clue, but sincerely they want to know, “What is the highest truth? What is the real existence? What is the janmady asya yatah, the cause from which everything is coming? What’s the sarva karana karanam?”, then Krishna sends the spiritual adviser, the spiritual master, His devotee there so that that fallen soul can get information about Krishna. It is not a coincidence. It is the mercy of Krishna that one is able to meet a pure devotee and accept instruction from such a pure devotee.

What did Krishnadas Kaviraj praying in Caitanya Caritamrita?

“I am giving up Vedic religion, I am giving up family duties, I am giving up all kinds of attachments, I am giving up even the desire for being materially happy, I am giving up the desire for mental peace, I’m giving up every… I simply want to absorb my mind in the service of Sri Sri Radha-Madhava, following in Their mercy, getting the mercy of Nitai Gaur. It is my only goal in life.” So this is our special opportunity that Prabhupad has given us Krishna consciousness in its pure form.

The intense prayer of Advaita Gosai

Advaita Gosai, you know how He was so much absorbed in this mood to deliver all the fallen souls. He couldn’t tolerate that they were simply religious, that they were doing their worship to God without any desire for actually serving Krishna and loving Krishna. What to speak of that today, people have absolutely forgotten about worshipping God in many places. His disturbance that they’re actually not real devotees of God, they are businessmen in exchange with God trying to get something back from God, not really loving God, not tasting the real nectar. Therefore He started to do a great tapasya. He started to fast and He started to cry out “Gauranga! Gauranga! Gauranga!” He was praying for the advent of Lord Caitanya.

Simultaneously nearby, while He was praying in Śāntipura, nearby Haridas Thakur was praying in Phuliyā for the descent of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who alone can give His pure devotional service. So Advaita was fasting, He was crying, crying, crying, that these souls be delivered, crying for the coming of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu and loudly shouting Gauranga! Gauranga! Hu hu! Crying, shouting, fasting and then He took the Ganges water and He started to offer the Tulasi flowers and He had the salagrama and He was offering the Tulasi flowers. You see our American BBT has published in the Caitanya Caritamrita, while He was doing His puja, He is offering again and again worship to Lord Caitanya, praying, crying, until finally His loud shouting actually reached Caitanya Mahaprabhu and shook Him, that “I have to come.” In fact, Advaita said that “If My name is Advaita, if I am non-different from the Supreme Lord, if I am Maha Vishnu, then on My call, He must come. Otherwise My name is not Advaita, and I am not who I am.”

So because of His intense desire the Lord decided to come. Therefore every one of us is so much indebted to Advaita Gosai.

The blue print by Jiva Goswami

There was once an attempt by Jiva Goswami… or he did not attempt… he actually established known as the Visva Vaisnava Maha Sabha, which was a great congress of all Vaisnava devotees of the Lord. To create a… you know a worldwide spiritual consciousness, or within that Visva Vaisnava Mahasabha, he gave a basic blue print how the whole world could be based upon pure God consciousness, pure Krishna consciousness, and he gave twenty-six different categories of world spiritual conquest of which Prabhupada has already given most… you know, given all of them in different forms, you see. It’s just that we are at different levels of implementation.

Receiving the mantra

Dhruva Maharaja was searching for Krishna. He couldn’t find Him until he was given a mantra. When he received the mantra “om namo bhagavate vasudevaya”, he chanted, then he could finally achieve Krishna. One has to receive a mantra, a name of Krishna, from a bona fide spiritual master, and this has been happening since time immemorial.
